bfing preemie
posted 1st Nov
I'm bfing my 36weeker and it's Hell. He wants to eat for 5 minutes maybe 10 every half an hour to an hour. Is there anyway to get him to eat more less often. I know I'm producing plenty. I can hand express 2+ozs off of one breast at any given time. He's got a great latch and you can hear him suck and swallow. Idk what the issue is. I'm afraid I'm going to have to switch to ff if he keeps this up much longer because I have two other kids and a house to take care of as well. Ugh! Help please!

Preemies tummies are very small, maybe he's just trying to get his fill?
*Edited to add*
Thought he was a preemie for some reason... maybe it's just coming out fast still & he can't handle the flow? Have you tried expressing a bit before you feed him to get out the excess pressure?

As much of a pain as it is, it's normal! Perhaps you could try block feeding, which is nursing on one breast for 2-3 or even 4 feedings to make sure they get more fatty milk.

My daughter was like that she was only 5lbs and she would BF for maybe 5 minutes and then fall asleep, it worried me that she wasn't getting enough so i would pump and then feed it to her in bottles so i could keep track of how much she was eating.

He is a preemie. Very slightly premature but still.

He's probably just still getting used to it. My son was the same way. He was born at 32 weeks and he was only getting 4cc's of milk every 3 hours and that filled him up. When they let me actually nurse him (instead of the feeding tube) he would go at it for 15-20 minutes but only get a couple ounces since it was a lot of work.
He's probably just doing that as a comfort thing : ) Is there anyone else in the house who can help?

My son was 5 days overdue... He will be 2 weeks tomorrow. He weighed 5bs4oz when he was born.... I havent had an issue with BF until today... He wants to eat and eat! I also have other kids and a house to deal with but weve gotta keep ourselves strong... Dishes will always have to be done but BF our babies cant be done forever. Try the "football" hold. Thats what ive switched to.... Seems to help.

Sorry this is late but if you're still having Issues here's my advice. Is his poop green at all? Maybe try pumping some milk out before he eats so he gets more hind milk. That might keep him full longer. If he's getting a lot of foremilk it's more water and is gonna leave him hungry. But he is still little and his tummy is still small. As he gets bigger it will get better I promise mama
