How do you legally make someone a godparent in ohio?

posted 1st Nov
How do you make some your babies godparent legally? My husband and I have someone we want to take guardianship of our child in case of our deaths or in case somehow our health one interferes with caring for the child. We want to make sure this is done where the Godmother we have chosen can bring up a document that says she is the one who is to care for the child if these circumstances ever occur.

I looked into this because my husband's family does that whole godparent, godson, goddaughter thing like if something actually happened to that child they would raise it. Which is bull because I know they wouldnt.

You have to be sponsored by someone from the catholic church. There will be witnesses.

If you are just talking about who will raise your child without the godparent title, then you just do a will.

I got a certificate from the church announcing I was the godparent... I'm not sure if that holds anything legal to it or not though...

Write it down... have everyone sign it... and have it noterized (spelling?) lol

Yes, it is legal. Also, anytime something is notorized...it becomes a legal, binding document.

If you just go through the church to choose godparents I don't think that legally makes them guardians in the event of your inability to be with them. I'm pretty sure you legally have to have it specified in your will.

there is a difference between a godparent (which has to do with church and baptism and who is to raise the kid in case of death) and a legal guardian should something happen.

legal guardian you need a will with the info in it.
godparent is usually done at the church. over here you get that done when the child gets baptised. the godparent promises to take care and raise your child and make sure it is raised in the right religion.

It doesn't. A godparent, by definition, is not the person who will take care of the children if the parents were to pass. A godparent leads the child, spiritually, and stands for the child during a baptism.

A god parent is a religious thing nothing to do with guardianship in the event of the death of parents you would need it written up in a will
