No, it's not illegal in nc. They just don't allow midwives to assist.
I live right by the state line, my birth center is on the sc side and gets a fair amount of customers from nc

Exactly because how can they punish you if you accidently have it at home. But for me we are planning an UC. Iowa it is legal to have a midwife but there are none in the area doing homebirths. And I am on the border of Nebraska and there it is illegal to have midwifes/doulas at a home birth.

I don't want a midwife. I had one with my second son and she was great, but not needed. My first was with a doctor and I had the worst experience, and my third same story. So this time around I convinced hubby to study up and we are going to do it. Which YES we have backups and a plan if something/anything goes wrong. But I am studying to be a midwife so this is my passion. Good luck with your UC, what made you decide on that? (always curious on why others pick it)

I actually didn't know you could do a UC.   I met a woman on here that had one and I became very interested. I started looking into it before I got pregnant this time, talked with a few women and came to the realization that pregnancy and birth is NOT a medical emergency. It's a life event that should consist of family and love.  
I look forward to hearing about how your's goes.   I frequent a secret group on Facebook for UP/UC women and besides my husband they have been a HUGE support system.

I do too, I don't know what inspired me. But have always wanted one, my previous husband (my three kids dad) wanted nothing to do with a home birth. But now that I am remarried my new husband was like wth why go to the hospital and why have a midwife this isn't a hospital need. Not everyone agrees with this choice but I don't push it on anyone.   Good for you, and yep I will let you know.

Oh, yeah. I try not to push any birth choices on anyone.   I'm so glad my husband is supportive. I made the mistake of telling my FIL that I was having a homebirth and he decided to explain to me how women die in childbirth and all births should be in a hospital with an epidural.  

I must say..I give props to you ladies doing a home birth. I fully agree with it and i love the thought of it. I wish I could say I was doing one but sadly I just don't have the environment for it
