Daughter might be in Special Ed soon....I just need support

posted 31st Oct
Hey everyone...so my daughter Adina is 3.5 now, and she is in a home based preschool program where her teacher comes from the local school to teach her once a week. Adina has a lot of behavioral problems- screaming bloody murder all the time, extreme separation anxiety, not listening to a word I say, severe tantrums...etc Her teacher discussed her concerns with me that she thinks Adina has some sort of learning disability- either ADD, ADHD, a form of aspergers or autism, or OCD...etc, And currently we are testing her.

These two teachers from the school district came to test her and treated her horribly- they asked her all these questions and never even gave her a chance to answer, and they claim shes developmentally behind- I don't think she is, I think they have bad methods of testing children. BUT I know something is going on with her, I just don't think its as severe as they're making it out to be.

Anyways....There are more tests we have to do next week, but I got paperwork saying they want her in special ed classes....I saw those words and cried my eyes out...It's just so hard....I know theres no shame in this, etc- but it just shocked me to read the words "Special education" about my daughter...I wasn't expecting that....I just need some support...My daughter means the world to me and I want to be sure that I do everything I can to help her have a good life.

My son was 3.5. I know I was not there but testing is hell ( took us 3 full days to get through) it is important to rememberdevelopmental delays are not just academics but social issues as well. I know it's rough at first, but in the program you will meet parents who have similar situations and it becomes easier to cope with.

Get her evaluated by the Dr. If they don't think she.needs it you can fight it

Hold up, so has she seen a medical professional or just these "teachers"?

It's going to be okay. My sister is a special Ed preschool teacher. She has some students that are more advanced in most areas than her regular class. Your baby will do fine if she has to go and it would probably help her emotional development.

I think you can get her retested. I dont have a special needs child but my sister is.

My mother got my sister tested and their first diagnosis was "mental retardation" at 4, but a mother know her child. She was retested and it turns out she has Asbergers and she just didnt want to answer the questions and she has extreme social anxiety.

Also special education classes arent bad. My sister is in them, the only difference I see are very small class sizes, one on one learning time for slower learners and allowance for any special tutors for speech etc during the day. Shes blossomed so MUCH

You can always seek out a second opinion. I was put in a special reading/writing class in first grade and they thought I was slow. In reality, I was reading faster than the other children so I would lose the place they were at (they made us read a few sentences out loud and every student had to follow along) and my writing problems came from the teacher trying to get me to write with my right hand. I'm not saying it's the same situation with your child or anything, just that sometimes the original diagnosis is wrong.

I don't get how they can think a child that age will answer especially if they don't usually talk to strange people. K's pedi back in Feb asked her to say her ABC's which she knew for a year before that. She wouldn't say them! The pedi decided that she might need tutoring then she asked K to say her name and because her name is somewhat hard to say (you know i dont use her name on here) but she tried to say it, the pedi again decided that special tutoring was going to be needed.
I know that probably doesn't help much but just know I'm here for you mama. I don't think they could possibly know anything at this point. Maybe Adina was having a bad day and things just didn't work out as planned. It'll be ok <3

Acey, everything will be okay! I agree with what most people are saying, try to get her evaluated by a real doctor. Lanie was not in special ed, but we thoight she was going to be. We went through three years of therapy with her, occupational, physical and speech. And they did wonders for her. Of you have any kond of programs available to you like that, i highly reccomend you look into them! no matter what happens, remember that adina is so bright, and if ahe does need any kind of "extra" help, its GOOD for her, and you. It will give her one on one time with someone who cares and knows how to help her (besides you of course!) keep your head up mama! And sorry for all the spellong errors, apparently my phone doesnt like BG!
