Kids who recieve services

posted 31st Oct
Sorry if this is the wrong section

If your child recieves services through the school district (PT, OT, Psych), does it stop when a kid gets to a certain point?

Like Cora is getting OT services. It started last friday and the OT mentioned that Cora might not need services for long

How does does "services" last? Like if Cora demonstrates that she can do everything, will they end, even if she isn't in school yet?

Well Teagan is doing the evals for the school district right now, but I believe that's correct. If they don't qualify for special services then they'll usually stop them, and the kid will go into school when they would normally start like any other child.

With DS they always made a plan and we'd go from there. They said once he gets to a point where they're comfortable at the level he's at they'll stop services. That was in tx though so once we get him evaluated here I don't know what'll happen they said he'd be in school but I won't know more until later.

Ever since we went over what skills Cora couldn't or wouldn't do, she has been doing them. Little smurf

Like i told the OT that Cora couldn't zipper a jacket, and ever since the OT left last friday, Cora has ben zipping her own jackets like a pro

I work for a Canadian school district so it may be different but here they do quarterly evaluations to see if the child is meeting certain requirements and if they do then they stop receiving the service.

When I was a child, I was in speech therapy through the school. I started in my 2nd year of first grade (got held back) and went to about 5th/6th grade. I think it depends on how good she does and when they think she's ready to not have the service anymore.

Sorry if that didn't help much.

DS is in general therapy and he's qualified to receive it for 1 year, no matter how much he improves. If he still needs it after 1 year, they'll extend it for another year. He'll be in preschool at that time so it depends on the school and if they're willing to work with him how often he'll still be in therapy, if at all.

ETA: He's 3 1/2 and will be starting preschool September 2013.

My brother had speech & OT all the way until 6th grade. He is in a school for kids like him now & they still do it. I know some kids at my high school still had speech & OT until they graduated.

They have told me he will recieve services as he needs them. When they feel he no longer needs it we will have an IEP meeting to discuss it and it will be decided then if services need to continue.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they continue to do evals when she meets goals and then see if she qualifies for services. If not then they figure she'll start kindergarten like any other kid you know?

Kaylee just started ST a couple months back.. they said we will meet yearly to find out if she still needs it. right now at age 5 they are saying only 50 percent of her speech is understandable.. she is making great strides.. last night she said she wanted poo.. noticed it didnt sound right corrected her self and said she wanted foo (food) she emphasized the F.. they said they can estimate how long she will need it (3 years) but it depends how fast she picks up how much she wants to learn . etc

In NY, they receive therapies, until the therapy won't help them anymore and she reaches all the goals they set out for her.

So once all the goals are met and they believe she's functioning at her age appropriate level she will be transitioned out. They normally do it slowly, from what I've heard as to not cause an overload for sensitive( or "fragile") children.

I think it just depends on how well they're doing and how they're progressing.

My little brother is in 9th grade this year. He has Aspergers and he still receives some services at school. Not as much as he did when he was younger though, because he's gotten better with it.
