Minimum wage jobs
posted 31st Oct
Okay so I got a part time job $8.00/hr it's seasonal. Lets say they hire me for full time and SO can only find minimum wage jobs at the moment. If we are both working 40hrs a week can we do it? Can we afford to suppor ourselves, a household, and other expenses ?
Would we be completely cut off state medical and/or foodstamps?
I need my own place! DD needs her own room. I am enrolling in college and SO Will be going back to school to further his education as well so it won't be this way forever.
I just need some advice from any mamas out there that may do this already... If its even possible
EDIT idc if they lower my snap benifits, my main concern is medical for me and my family. It would e nice of I could get some snap benefits to help out (reduced obv) but if my my main concern is medical.

Okay I have been doing this kind of calculation because me and SO are looking into getting our own place soon. So just an estimate, with you BOTH working full time even if it's min wage you COULD afford to live on your own. My SO makes 7.65 an hour and brings in about 1100 a month if he gets 40 hours every week. That IS enough to make it, at least here...but you could barley scrape by. So if you are both working full time I think y'all could afford it, just budgeting your money right, and maybe look into an all bills paid apartment.
I am not sure if you still would need goverment assitance?
Good luck!

you'd bring in at most 1000 each a month
sooo 2000
depending on what rent is

that depends on your bills and your understanding of wants vs needs. i doubt you would be completely cut off, but your benefits would be reduced. there are other state medical programs for those that make more than the maximum limit for medicaid, like CHIPS.

Depends on how much cost of living is where you live? Here a 2br apt is 800.. but you can possibly apply for section 8? or maybe go into a lower income housing place

Yeah, we paid 1300 when we lived in VA for a townhome, so it just depends where you live. I couldnt live off of minimum wage.. but i know alot of people that do.

The Low income place is not a option right now some mumbo jumbo about SO having a record when he doesn't so it's gonna be a while before that happens & all sec 8 is closed where I live

Why will it be a while? All he has to do is show its not him. What are they saying? Is it a specific charge?

Definitely possible. As of right now, I only make $8.45 an hour (changing soon, but still). I have a $250 car note, $150 insurance, $170 phone bill, $50 electric bill and $6 cable/internet bill (the cable/internet is a combo price with my apartment building). I pay all of that on my own, and because SO makes more ($14.50).. he pays the rent, which is $690. We spend about $400-500 on groceries a month, $200 in gas a month. And then his car/insurance bills. Still have money left over. If you guys share one car, or one has a car and the other uses public transportation... it's DEFINITELY doable.
Oh, and for figures... I bring in about $1200 a month. So if you both bring in that much, $2400 is pretty easy to get by on. You won't have many 'wants' but your needs will be covered Good luck!

Totally doable.
DH only makes 10 an hour but he gets a lot of overtime. He roughly brings home 500/week. Sometimes more, sometimes less. And we have 5 children (we have 3 of our own and get foster payments for the other two, but before them, we were making it).

Almost 2000- you could do it on a right budget. Here nicer apts start at 900 and house 1100-1300 to rent. If you do t have car payments you'll be fine but Iam not including child care

I make 2000 a month and Im a single mother. Its doable. BUT i also live in a area with a low cost of living. my 2 bedroom duplex is only 525 a month with water paid.

I think in a low cost living with only one lo, you can accomplish it. But you won't be living high of the hog either.
