Do dogs remember their previous owners.

I had to get rid of my 7 month old dog the other day. I had him for about 4 months and he was so attached to me, followed me everywhere, he was my baby. Do you think he feels abandoned? I never had to get rid of an animal like this so I don't know I am just super sad about it.

He will remember you but he shouldn't be sad if his new owners are good with him.

He'll be sad for a while until he realizes you aren't coming back. If the new family is good to him, he'll get over you, lol.

I think they do.
I had to give my 2-year-old Pug to my husband's grandmother because he had SEVERE separation anxiety issues and I work all day. His grandmother is a homebody. Hardest decision ever, but he is much happier having someone with him all day. I visit him and he runs right up to me, so I think he remembers me. I think it's a scent thing. They are good with their noses; dogs are.
I don't think dogs have the ability to feel "abandoned," in my opinion. I don't think their mental capacity allows for that. Dogs are smart, they care for their owners safety, they are good with their noses- but I think as long as someone is loving them, feeding them, and paying attention to them- they are happy. They don't care who it is. You know?

I'm inclined to say yes.

I believe they do remember their previous owners. I believe the same for cats as well.

My old dog remembered me! I gave her to my parents when we left to go overseas. She didn't see my for 3 1/2 years but when we finally came home she was so SO excited to see me. It sounded like she was crying and she stayed glued to me for 3 days before she finally got enough loving to go back to her normal self. It was the sweetest thing ever!
