questions about insurance & HIPPA
posted 30th Oct
I need some help. I just got DHS letter in the mail stating I don't qualify for medicaid anymore bc hubby brings in way too much. Fine. I get that and that's ok, but even when his insurance through his work kicks in (a month or more maybe) isn't pregnancy a pre-existing condition that will not be covered? It's some stupid insurance plan through Capitol Administrators. My other question is: I found something that says new HIPPA guidelines say insurances cannot classify pregnancy as pre-existing does anyone know if that is true?? And finally, what other options do I have for insurance? Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Pregnancy shouldn't be pre-insisting. I've never heard of that before. I'm not sure about insurance other than a private insurance, like Kaiser or something similar.

Usually commercial insurances cannot classify it a pre-existing . Like Meg said, private insurances can because they can basically make their own rules about basically anything.

We have Aetna through hubby's work. And blue cross through his last job. I have a heart condition that Aetna has to cover. Even though I was diagnosed when I had blue cross. All I had to to was send Aetna a letter from blue cross showing that I was coved this year by another insurance. They said without that letter they wouldn't have covered me.

Commercial insurances are the big names Aetna, BCBS, etc. Private insurances could be through things like specific branches relates to employment - iron workers, hospital workers etc. I know Catholic organizations have stricter rules as well.
Generally, if the individual group is through a major medical insurance, they have to abide by that companies policies.
Pregnancy usually isn't considered pre-existing because the treatment will eventually end, versus a patient who needs dialysis weekly, transfusions, etc.

got it. In MD it was considered a pre-existing condition and was not covered. But I'm in TN now so I thought maybe it was different. Well I appreciate the responses I'm not freaking out quite as bad now. Thank you very much!! Looks like hubby's work ins. will be first health (never heard of them) I'll just have to wait and see for now. I have other options to pay for this pregnancy though so that's a relief.
