My son HATES school he cries when he needs to do his homework he says he wants to watch tv. It frustrates me that he wants to watch tv and play on my phone rather then do his homework and when I try to teach him things, but he has no interest to learn. We recently got his progress report and it says that is at risk of retention! I feel so dissapointed in myself! How did I let this happen?!! The teachers are probably looking at me like I'm a bad mother. I'm just so sad I plan on cutting off the cable and taking tvs away until I feel he is caught up. I just feel so bad! I think he does know what hes doing but he rather give me any answer then the right answer because he wants to run off and watch tv already. Did any other moms have this problem with their child? If so what did you guys do? I need help Im so depressed. I want him to learn and do good in school thanks in advance for the help

How old is he?

Is there an ability to get him into an after school program like a Sylvin learning center?

He's 5 and yea I'm thinking about putting him in a learning center. I have to check rates and the times they are available. My husband says he had trouble learning but I thought he was kidding because hes just a dumbass in general lol just kidding, but I'm beginning to think maybe its a learning disorder he got from his dad.

He is only 5. Give it some time. If he wasn't in preschool and or have a drive to do homework (I can't believe that kindergartners have homework), this could be something that he needs to fit into a routine. I would still look into a learning center. If there is a concern of a disability, they will figure it out.

I have a 5yo. We do a schedule so he knows when he has to do his homework & he isn't allowed to watch any tv until it's done.
He gets home from school & plays with his brother while I cook dinner. We eat & do homework immediately. Then we wash up, pjs & tv time (if he was good at school).

How much homework does your son have? Mine does 2 papers a day + whatever else I make him do.

We have behavior issues, not learning ones.

excited mommy of 3, my heart goes out to you! I have been in your shoes. Believe me, it isn't something that you did!

I knew that something wasn't quite right with my second son when he started school. He didn't want to read, write or work on his school projects. He would do anything he could to get out of it. When our little guys feel like it is too hard, they don't even want to try.

I would encourage you to make an appointment and sit down with your son's teacher/teachers. I know from experience when my son's teachers saw that I was an involved parent and wanted to come up with a solution, it make a big difference. They recognized that we were on the same team and we all wanted to help him be successful in school.

It did turn out after being tested in third grade that DS had a learning disability. He processed information differently than the other kids. We had to figure out ways to help him learn that would work for him. And, it wasn't easy.

You get to be your son's biggest cheerleader. Like others shared, I found it best to work on his homework as soon as he got home from school. His reward was to be able to watch tv once he was done -- and sometimes that didn't happen until after dinner. When I didn't back down from this (even when he got upset with me), he realized that he needed to be cooperative and get his work done. Trust me, changes won't happen overnight. It will take some perseverance on your part!

Hang in there, mom! I will be praying for you and your family.

My oldest who is now 10 was and still the same way, she does not really have homework but reading and to study for a test once a week, she is in an ISP class, and from what I undertand its the same as an IEP. class.

But anyways, what I ended up doing was homework as soon as the kids get home from school. I have a quick snack ready for when they come home. Of some crackers and cheese with some deli meats or some graps and yogurt etc...

They munch on their snakcs at the table and I read what their homework is for that night. And we talk it over, and I let them choose what page they want to start with. And we go over it together, and I always say, oh wow this is very hard for mommy can you teach me how to do it, and my kids get so excited thinking about how they get to teach me something. lol And they jump right into it.

And if I see them doing it wrong making a mistake, I just tell them I still need help and to show me again, and they usualy caught on to their own mistake and if not, it was no big deal. I dont correct their homework, its the teachers job to do it. lol If they get some answers wrong it goes to school like that, and the teacher will know what areas she needs to work on with them etc...I think its important that the teacher knows that. IMO anyways. lol

But my youngest is 4 and in kindergarten and I do the same with her, and we dont have issues, maybe try something like that with yours. It might help. lol
