Breastfeeding a preemie.

How long did it take for them to latch onto the breast? I know all babies are different. Just wanna hear everyone's experiences.

My preemie latched on about 3 minutes after he popped out. But he wasn't a micro preemie and he didn't have any trouble breathing on his own or anything.

My daughter managed to latch on by 30 weeks gestation or so, but she was never really able to nurse. I'd talk to an LC if you haven't yet, because sometimes it takes a lot of support with a preemie.

My baby isnt to premature, but not old enough to be considered late pre-term. My water broke at 35+5, and my baby was born on exactly 36 weeks. She tried latching on almost immediately. It took about a day of skin to skin and keeping her close to me for her to latch on, but we had problems with falling asleep at the breast and a weak suckling. the younger the baby the harder it is.

My first was born at 30 weeks and my second was born at 31 weeks and they both started breastfeeding around 33 weeks. They both caught on right away.

I had to wait 2 weeks after my daughter was born to try and bf her in the NICU. She would not take me and i tried for 4 months then gave up. born 35 weeks with a 3 1/2 week stay in the nicu.

my newest addition born at 35 weeks latched on 9 hours after he was born. Doing well and only 9 hours of nicu time.

I tried getting her to latch about an hour after birth, but she wouldn't. She's barely a preemie cause she was born at 35 weeks, but she was very small. She had trouble eating in the hospital and had to stay an extra day before coming home, but never had to stay in the NICU. She's eating very good now, though. And I'm pumping right now and she eats the breast milk very well, so I'm gonna see if she'll latch.
