re: getting my daughters ears pierced

posted 29th Oct
Do not take her to any place that uses a piercing gun i.e: Claire's, Piercing Pagoda etc. That will just create scar tissue. Take her to any actual piercer. Would you rather it be done improperly and be quick or it take a bit longer and done properly?

That was just off the top of my head.. Doesn't mean she has to go there

I'd be worried about them not being even if they used two guns at the same time... that's just me though.

That isn't the point.

I would get it done by a person who does piercings for a living. I almost worked at claires, and had some training. They hardly teach you the appropriate way to pierce an ear, it's more like "here's how you use the gun." so it may turn out uneven or something.

Oh really? Why are they bad?! My 3 and a half year old still doesn't have hers pierced yet so I need info!

Then you might need to wait until she is a bit older...

Doing both sides at the same time is going to result in uneven holes. Unless they're able to both do it at the exact same moment, you can pretty much guarantee that your daughter is going to jump a bit before the second is able to go through.. kwim?

What is BME's position on guns?

"A piercing gun, traditionally used by mall-stores for piercing ears, is typically inappropriate for piercing of any kind, especially body piercing. Almost all medical professionals agree that piercing guns can not be adequately sterilized (an alcohol wipe is NOT sterilization); which means that in theory they are capable of passing hepatitis and other diseases.

In addition, experience has taught the industry that:

• Ear piercing studs are dull and tear through the body causing unnecessary scarring, pain, and other complications.

• Ear piercing guns are inaccurate and not designed for piercing most body parts resulting in improper piercing placement.

• Ear piercing studs are the wrong size and too short for most piercings resulting in swelling, rejection, infection, and many other problems.

Any "piercer" using a piercing gun should be avoided."

You're a piercer, advocating for not getting a piercing by a professional?! seems likely and logical........

If needles freak her out, you might want to wait until she's a bit older.
