Can't have known too many people if you can't even name one slang term for meth.

I don't think everyone has an addiction. Saying that, I am addicted to sex/masturbation. I have a physical and mental need to orgasm at least 3 times a day, whether through sex or masturbation. I wake up before my children, nap-time, and after they go to bed so I can get off. Sometimes I can find another opportunity during the day while my boyfriend is watching the kids. I can function without it, but my personality nearly changes, and everything becomes a facade to hide what I'm really thinking about.
Anti-depressants have helped me be able deal with it better, but have not decreased my sex drive.

I don't think that everyone has an addiction. I view an addiction as something completely different from a compulsion.

Thank you for shareing.

Is it like a "high" for you? I think I am(or maybe, I know) addicted to food. Its all I think about and when I eat, its kinda like a high(and I have never been high once in my life) but it numbs my pain/stresses. I have nothing going right for me right now(lost my business,in debt, motor went out in my Yukon and much more) and food is one thing that does make me happy and never disappoints me. I have NO idea why I am like this. I wasn't like this 4 yrs ago. I have never had a problem with my weight, always been average sized and healthy. but not anymore.....I just. Don't. Know. :-/

How would you think/say its different?

I would say a compulsion is something that you do without thinking. An addiction is something that you need, to function.

I think there is often compulsion within an addiction, but not necessarily addiction in compulsion. Does that make any sense, or am I talkin' out my butt?

Like... hmm. How can I demonstrate. Okay. Say, alcohol.

Going to the fridge and grabbing a beer without thinking is a compulsion. Not having any beer and say, yelling at your spouse because no one went out and got beer, and then storming out of the house with no shoes on... addiction.

Hmm. But don't you think some compulsions are non-ritualistic?

I don't think I'm addicted to anything. I obsess over smurf sometimes but then lose interest like 2 days later. I used to be addicted to coke and they say once an addict always an addict, right? Well I don't think so. I can't even think about that smurf without making a face. I'm not interested at all.

Yes and no. It really depends upon whether calling something a compulsion is based upon the definition found in psychiatry or based upon some other definition. I know that in my mind, I would consider something a compulsion even without the ritualistic component. I also feel that a ritualistic component can be found with most compulsive behaviors however it may not be blatantly obvious.

Interesting. I was strictly speaking in a non-psychiatry specific sense, since I was trying to think of those that wouldn't have a psychiatry-specific addiction.

(Also-- side note, I'm having total flashbacks to the debate I had about all organized religions being socially accepted forms of OCD!)
