I don't see anything wrong but he does....Rant/Advice

posted 29th Oct
So, my 3 yr old (4 in Jan) has a paci. She doesn't and didn't always have one. Out of the blue one day, she decided to play with it. OK. Not a big deal. She doesn't take it anywhere nor to daycare. It's not always in her mouth. The only real time she has it is when she's ready for bed even then the paci is only in her mouth for 10 mins then she just holds onto it.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Personally, I think it's kind of a security blanket type deal (though she has a blanket). But dad doesn't like it and thinks she's too big to even have it at all! Ugh. It's annoying yet funny because our daughter will hide it from him and wait till he's asleep to get it out.

There's even some night where she won't have it at all-just holds it.

So, can someone please tell me what the big deal is? I don't see it!

Well, enough for my rant time to get busy for the day. Blah!

It can affect your child's teeth and their speech. Besides when I see a kid who has to take a pacifier out of their mouth to talk, it drives me nuts.

Let her attach to something else. I would take it away before it becomes a full blown "addiction"

4 is super old to have a paci. Even though she doesn't seem to need it, id take it away before she does.

I hate paci's all together, but its your child. Do what you want.
Sure it can cause teeth issues but not always my nephew was almost 6 before he got rid of his paci and he had perfect straight teeth with no issues at all.

Does not mean every kid will be like that. But to me they will get rid of it when ready. My dd is 10 and still sleeps with her crib blanket, sure to some its not the samething but to me it is. Its comfort and a security why rush it.

She just started the paci thing a week ago...It happened over the summer once but it only lasted 3 weeks and she moved onto something else. She has her 2 blankets and an animal she cannot live without. She doesn't always have, she doesn't suck on it just has it in her hand or mouth and when its in her mouth it just stays there.

Need to figure out how to make her forget about it again.

just take it away when she's not trying to use it and then when/if she looks for it at bedtime, give her something else.

My son had a paci until he was 1, he threw it away and never picked it up again. I am pregnant now, and bought some for the new baby, he is almost 5, and was playing with it one day, I told him no that it's for babies, and he kept playing with it, but eventually got bored and put it down and left it alone. I think I would encourage your child to not to use a paci at that age, tell her that she will be going to school soon, and that big kids don't use them, or find her something else to comfort her at bedtime.
