Chores

posted 28th Oct
My DS killed his Nentndo DS last night in the washer. I told him I would not buy him one but he wants to work around the house and earn some money so that he can save up and buy himself one. I am willing to do this but I did make it clear that his usual responsibilities don't count such as cleaning his room or doing his laundry. He is willing to clean the laundry room, bathroom and sweep the kitchen and the living room. How much should I pay him to do this stuff?

Bathroom - I would only allow him to clean the sink, put things away, sweep and mop.
Laundry room - I would only allow him to put stuff away, sweep and mop.
Kitchen - He can only clean off the table and sweep the floor.
Living room - sweep the floor.

He is 8 and in the third grade. A new DS is probably about 140.00 depending on which one he wants.

Could you check a GameStop for a used one that is cheaper?

With my daughter I do an allowence depending on her grade. I want to teach money management. Since your son is in 3rd grade I would do $3 a week. You can include what you want with what is required, if the extra chores means more money or not. I usually don't. I always say that as a member of the family you have to do cetain things just as part of living in a home with others. This has eliminated the begging when we go shopping and she isn't as willing to spend her own money on crap because she is trying to save for something else. She is in 5th grade so she gets $5 a week.

Probably but he doesn't have enough money and I am not buying him one.

It's worked really well. I have done it since 1st grade with her since it was $1 a week.

I think it's great you're teaching him respect and responsibility. He is 8...so I would make him save up half then I would meet him halfway. It's going to take him forever to save 140.00.
I would pay around 5.00 for a non chore.

Yeah I don't want to set him up for failure but I want him to learn what the value of a dollar is. He is so careless about his stuff.

You can prolly get a DS between $60-$100 depending on the pawn shop..
I'd do like between $5-$10 a chore depending on difficulty. If he wanted one of the newer more expensive models, then I'd make him wait until Christmas because it's so close lol

I am not buying him one for Christmas. I already told him I am not buying him anymore electronics, that is why he wants to "work".

Yes, I understand that, I didn't say cut out the work part, just if he wanted a more expensive one he'd get it near Christmas. YOU'RE still paying for it regardless of the work he does.
