Hemiplegia -Hemiparesis-Celebral Palsy (UPDATE) strokes in c

posted 28th May
My 20mth old son has been diagnosed as having Hemiparesis, (information below) I have also just had my 4th baby, 5 weeks ago and we have just had our sons results this week, and are organising our sons physio to start. I am wondering how many other mums, have children no matter what age with this, and if anyone wants to talk, and help share in how to cope.

HEMIPLEGIA is a type of CEREBRAL PALSY that results from damage to the parts of the brain that control muscle movements. This damage may occur before, during or shortly after birth.
The term HEMIPLEGIA means that the paralysis is on one side of the body. A similar medical term, HEMIPARESIS, means a weakness on one side of the body. In children with hemiplegia, the paralysis in the body occurs on the side opposite the affected part of the brain. For example, if the left side of the child's brain is injured, then the paralysis will be on the right side of the child's body.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF HEMIPLEGIA IN A CHILD?
The symptoms of SPASTIC HEMIPLEGIC CEREBRAL PALSY may differ from child to child and over time. Symptoms may include:

  • difficulty with fine motor tasks like writing or using scissors
    difficulty with walking and balance
stiffness and weakness in muscles on one side of the body
    seizures
delay in reaching expected developmental milestones such as rolling over, sitting up, crawling, or smiling
about one fourth of children with spastic hemiplegia may have an IQ below 70

IS HEMIPLEGIA A PROGRESSIVE CONDITION?
No hemiplegia is not a progressive condition, nor is it a disease. As children experience growth spurts, they may have more problems with muscle spasticity, but this does not mean that the initial injury has gotten worse.
ARE THERE TREATMENTS FOR CHILDREN WITH HEMIPLEGIA?
Children with hemiplegia cannot be "cured", but therapies can help with some of the symptoms. Medication can be prescribed for seizures. Orthotics, braces, and splints may help with spasticity and gait (walking).

Its such a wide range of different syptoms that can vary, we are certainly very luck with our son, he has a weakness on his left side, (arm and leg) but his other functions are fine, its just so common for children to have strokes, I just never thought it possible,,,

my neice has cerebal palsy. She isn't severe but she hardly talks and has to use AFO braces on her legs to walk and is still kind of unsteady. They give her Botox injections in her legs every 6 months to help muscle control.

I have a three and a half year old little boy that has had a significant problem with his right leg, it all started with his ankle turning in when he walks. The doctor said that it would be something he would out grow, that was two and a half years ago. He has yet to out grow it but it has gotten worse. He now has weakness throught his right leg. He has had a evelated ESR. I have been consistently talking to the doctor. Does anyone have any sugesstions

I am new too all of this,,we where just diagnosed in May, and we have sent off the paperwork, and are waiting for physio and OT, to help us with strengthening of his left side. My son has the same problem only with hisleft leg is slightly turned in,, but I have been told that it is because that is the weaker side, and it needs strengthening. What is ESR? I am trying to learn as much as I can about this too help others, because even though there are sites and information out there,, its not enough, I want people to try and share any info they have or how they cope what they do etc......
