National DNA database *poll*

posted 28th Oct
I was watching Crimes that shock Britain, it was about a teenager girl called Sallywho was brutally stabbed and raped after she had died just outside her flat. Her ex boyfriend was the last person she was seen with and a few people came forward to say they had seen the pair arguing in his car outside her flat just minutes before she was killed. He was arrested, but the DNA from the rape proved it wasnt him. She had got out of the car, he had drivved of and within seconds she was attacked. The killer was eventually caught after he was arrested in connection with a seperate crime and his DNA matched the DNA found on Sally. Her family want a national DNA database, DNA taken from everyone when they are born not only to catch the guilty but to protect the innocent like Sallys ex. My question is do you think a national DNA database is a good idea? or do you think it violates human rights? Too big brother like?

I don't see the problem with it. It would solve crimes so much faster, and like you said, protect the innocent who are wrongly accused.

I see no problem with it but conspiracy theories are too easy to come up with on this one. Lol

I couldn't imagine the cost of that, all hospitals, home births, and such being everywhere. Plus with immigrants and illegal aliens, people would be left out. It's a great idea in theory, but I'd be interested in the execution of it. Is it you get blood drawn when you get a SS number or something?

Might I ask why, not trying to be argumentative or a bitch, just curious why you're against it.

I'm pretty sure that's illegal. Here you need a warrant to take blood or swab for DNA. And you need good reasons to get a warrant.

It violates my rights. I will not be treated as a possible criminal from birth.

It comes down to privacy. I'm half brain dead right now from being so sick, but I will elaborate later when I can think strait.

While I like the idea of being able to catch criminals more quickly, I have to say no.

I'm not opposed to a database filled with people who have already committed crimes or others who willingly give their DNA to be in the database.

When I was applying for my teaching license, I had to be fingerprinted so that it would be on file. That didn't bother me.

I'm against it for multiple reasons. The first being human error. The second being that some humans are chimeras. It is possible for a human to have two separate DNA sequences in their body. It's extraordinarily rare, but it is a possibility. The third reason I don't want the government to have access to my DNA is that I don't want to become another Henrietta Lacks. Her cells were essentially stolen from her to make profitable advances in medicine. She was never compensated and her family didn't even know about it until decades after her death.

All-in-all I may be a paranoid selfish bastard but those are my reasons against it.

I like the idea in theory, but it would fail on so many levels. I mean, the cost itself would be extremely expensive... And who would be paying for it?
