Birthday Gift??

posted 28th Oct
I need some help..My son's birthday is today. He will be 7 years old. I am looking for something nice but for 20 dollars or less. It could just a little more like 25 or something but that is it. We put so much on layaway for christmas that we just want to get him something small for now then the rest for christmas. Places around us.. walmart, target, kmart. Please Help...

instead of putting money down on layaway stuff... why didn't you just buy him a birthday present?

how sad...

when I was married... as a full grown adult.. I got my feelings hurt when my hsuband didn't put any thought or time into getting me a birthday gift. I cannot imagine as a 7 year old child...

just give him the $20 and let him pick something out....

why didn't you just get one of the christmas gifts as a birthday gift? Seems smurffy to do this to a kid - I mean nothing says I love you like waiting until the last min.

He will be getting presents from family it's not like he will be getting just one present and oh yeah happy birthday. Wow.. I also ordered him a cake I need to pick up today as well..it's not last min. I have many bills. we don't have alot of money hense why we have a layaway. We just recently have been getting close to catching up on our bills. I just also had a baby girl last month. So we had to buy diapers and little stuff here and there for her. But I should not have to explain anything to you people. I asked for help not to be judged to make me feel like smurf. You don't know my whole situation.

layaway is a waste of time and money....

if you put money into savings.. instead of giving it to them on layaway... you could buy the same stuff for less money next month.

or.. instead of putting stuff on layaway.. and you had to put money down...you could have bought him a birthday present.

or.. insetad of ordering a birthday cake.. you could have made one for $3 instead of... $20?

it's not even about the money. But.. your post... shows you did not put thought or planning into his birthday. 7 is old enough to notice this.... new baby... and he's about to have a smurffy birthday. He'll notice.. I promise

i would go with giving him the $20 for him to pick the gift out. it depends really what he is into? or buy something that goes with a gift from a family member. i am not in the states and dont know what the stores have so i cant help you there but when we go shopping for christmas or birthdays my husband and i tend to just wander around the toy section and find something in our price range. best of luck and happy birthday big man! lol

I gave you the same advice she did....

I'm sorry that I feel sorry for your child because of your poor planning. If you said you had no money... that's one thing. But you had money.. and instead of making sure his birthday was nice.. you put it towards christmas.. that you still have time to worry about.

Spend some time just the two of you. Leave your baby with your husband, or better yet have someone come watch her so you both can go.

Take him to the dollar store and give him the money to spend, rent movie, get popcorn, let him pick what you have for dinner...give him the gift of your time, it is worth so much more than a crappy gift.

right - he already probably feels ignored with a new baby and now it will appear as though mom and dad forgot about his birthday altogether. What's more a mother should know her child best of anyone and have the best insight possible into what gifts he would like. The fact that she is coming on BG the DAY OF his birthday shows the lack of thought or care she put into this. I mean his birthday is the same day every year, its not like this was a surprise.

so very true. At this poin the child probably wants to feel valued and loved and one on one time would be just the thing

my parents were broken when i was growing up and there have been times where my planning hasn't be the greatest... speaktruth2powr has a great idea as well... my daughter (who is only four) LOVES date nights with my husband and i. plus he is getting other gifts from family and i always loved going to school and telling all my friends what i got for christmas... no one really ever asks what you got for you birthday at 7!
