Double mastectomy

posted 26th Oct
I am watching Say Yes to the Cure (the owner of the store on the show has breast cancer) and am wondering if you get a double mastectomy then are you left with nothing at all or do they do plastic surgery to give you something?

It's up to the woman and her Dr's. some women do reconstructive surgery right away, others wait. If they don't do it then you're left with pretty much nothing there at all.

Depends on your insurance and you want reconstructive surgery.

Some people get a boob job later on, but it's separate surgery.
A lot of women chose not to get it though bc they don't feel like they need boobs.

I had a cousin that had a double masectomy at 42 years old. They took off everything including lymph nodes in the armpit. She wanted reconstruction and they had to put in spacers to stretch the skin, after that they put in implants and then she had nipples tattooed on her new breasts.
She showed us all at a celebration of her life after all this. She wanted to know if she looked normal now. She looked beautiful to me! It made me cry because I knew that she was going to be ok and not die because of her breasts.

It all depends. If the woman wants boobs they can have cosmetic surgery if they want to. Depending on the their insurance it might be covered or they might have to pay out of pocket. I have a cousin who just got hers done after having a double masectomy. Her insurance covered it so she took advantage of it

It depends on what they want and insurance, etc..

My mom is having her double mastectomy in dec with reconstruction. Which is a process over a few months I believe.   Makes me sad

My Nana had a double and got a boob job. My mamaw only had one removed and didn't want a boob. So she has one boob.

My mother only has one as well. This month marks a year from her diagnosis. It's been one helluva year with chemo, surgery, more chemo and radiation.

It sucks. Do you know what's the risks are after someone in your family has it?
