Pregnancy test & Birth control + EBF?

posted 26th Oct
Yesterday my OB prescribed birth control for me, but I haven't been able to get it yet, and since I'm EBF she said it's not effective for at least a month. But anyway, she knows SO and I had sex already and she didn't do a pregnancy test. We used a condom but I'm just paranoid I'm pregnant. Should I take a test before I get the pills tomorrow? I don't really have money for one but I'm sure I can find a dollar or two for a cheap one, I'd be 5 weeks if I was. I'm probably over worrying but I just don't want to take the pills if I already am.

Also, if I'm EBF will the pill dry my milk up? I forgot to ask the OB but she knows I'm nursing so I'm hoping she prescribed something that won't ruin my supply; I've worked really hard to be successful at breastfeeding.

She probably prescribed the mini pill which is compatible with EBF. It didn't effect my supply at all. And if it would make you feel better to test before you start the pill, then do it.

I am on the mini pill and EBF and have no issues with my supply.

As for the pregnancy test, take one if you are that concerned. I took one two weeks ago because we had unprotected sex the end of my first pill pack and it was negative. Though I still haven't had a period since the first one when I started on the pills but I am attributing that to nursing and the mini-pill since it can make your period screwy from what I have heard.

Is the mini-pill the progesterone only? She said she wasn't prescribing that one :/ Is that bad? Should I call and get a new prescription?

And I may test, just to ease my mind. I'm feeling like I did with Aria around 4-5 weeks but it may just be paranoia because I know I can't have another one right now.

My OB prescribed me bc and a pill to start my period when I was 5 weeks pregnant and didn't know, he didn't give me a pregnancy test even though my period was late, I decided to wait until I started my period to start the bc, and good thing too! I found out I was pregnant two weeks later and almost 8 weeks pregnant!! Also, after I had that baby, I was ebf and my dr knew and gave me a depo shot! I guess I didn't know any better, but that was a BAD BAD idea! I had horrible supply issues and ended up having to start supplementing with formula   I hate that dr now, and these aren't the only two reasons either!

If you're breastfeeding you shouldn't be on full hormone dose one. You should just make sure you're taking one thats compatible with EBF.

Mini-pill is progestin only. If you get a combo pill that gets into your milk supply to the baby and can cause supply issues. If your doctor isn't listening then you need to find a different one. Or let her know you want the mini-pill.

This! Find out what the name of the pill is that you are one and do your own research. If you want to be successful EBF then you need to be on a specific birthcontrol. So be proactive and do your own research.

Thanks so much! I'm so happy I posted this, I don't have the name of it right now (paperwork is at home and like I said haven't gotten to the pharmacy) but I'm going to call tomorrow and double check that its safe for breastfeeding. I definitely don't want anymore issues, I fought hard to breastfeed for this long, my goal is at least one year. But I know for sure she said she wasn't prescribing progesterone-only and since I've never been on any birth control I didn't think to ask many questions about it.

Ask your doctor but do your own research as well. Your doctor might have a different opinion of what is "compatible" with breastfeeding. If after doing your own research, you don't feel comfortable with it, ask her to prescribe something else.

I agree. I don't know where you go but Meyer at portage is amazing. When I was pregnant she gave me a list of all the options that were safe with breastfeeding and told me just to let her know which I preferred.
Also theres a la leche league in the area

I go to portage but see Dr baudoin. She's great but didn't give me options, just said she'd prescribe the pill. Didn't say what one or ask my preference.

In that case I can't say it enough, do your own research. Make sure the pill you're on is something you feel comfortable taking while breastfeeding. Good luck!

I looked at the paperwork that came with the pills (got them this morning) and I don't wanna take it until I call the dr on monday, and I kind of want to switch. It says it does go into your milk and can affect breast feeding. I'm definitely not starting them yet because I don't want to jeopardize nursing. SO said if anything he'd rather go on just using condoms until we wean Aria so that she gets all the benefits of breastmilk. But I'm still going to ask about the mini-pill.

When was breastfeeding and struggling with my supply anyway., I visited a breastfeeding consultaion clinic. It is true that the BC pills that contain estrogen can hurt your milk supply. I recall too that my doctor was reluctant about certain bc options because of the breastfeeding!!
