Possible learning disability

posted 26th Oct
My husband & I had a conference with my daughters teacher today ... It did not go well...Not well at all. Her teacher, my husband & I have decided to have her tested. Her teacher thinks she may have a learning disability and possibly be dyslexia
I felt like I was the second grader all over again sitting there hearing them talk about how I never "Tried hard enough." Altho I did, my parents later found out I had a memory problem. *Sigh* I didn't want my children to ever feel like I felt in school and now they think there is something wrong with my daughter

Anyone go thru this? As the parent how did you deal with it? I just keep feeling like she is going to get labeled as the "Special" child at school

Why do they suspect that? What signs is she showing and how old is she? At least they're catching it....it seems like they want to help instead of put her down like your school did to you.

She is 7 1/2, Second grade. She writes allot of her letters backwards, she misses sounds of words, some days are worse than others and she has trouble reading. Now she is having trouble with math as well. If it isn't dyslexia then it is another learning disability. She may not even get to move on to third grade which breaks my heart because she will not understand why she can not move on with her friends

Aw. The school doesn't have a program for her so she can at least move on to 3rd grade? It doesn't make sense that they would hold her back....

In order to pass you have to know certain curriculum and be able to read and write at a certain level which she is not at so unless she improves greatly she will be held back in second grade.

Oh crap, I hope that doesn't happen. Has she always had those things or are they just coming up now?
If she gets tested and it shows that she does have a disability then her curriculum needs to change in order to meet her needs. I'm not sure if they'll do that in the middle of the year though. Has your teacher given you a plan of what to do after she gets tested?

Ugh stuff like this breaks my heart for the detriment it can have on some kids. I really hate enforced formal learning and the school system sometimes

Hello,
I would like to say thank you for sharing your story. My daughter is in the first grade and I always thought she wasn't putting effort into remembering what we had just taught her. It was and has been so frustrating. Following what your post said, I looked up the information on dyslexia and it explains everything we have been struggling with. We've been to so many specialist, speech classes, etc and seem to be getting nowheres. I feel now that I understand her, I can better help her and have more patience when doing homework. For that I thank you.

She had issues in K and first grade but it just has gotten worse this year. We will come up with a plan at her school with her teacher after the testing since we do not know 100% what her learning disability is yet.

Try going to her teacher or school IEP teacher and tell them you want her tested for IEP classes, they are classes based on your childs learning disability. They really help kids who need the extra help.

kaylee just got her iep established the other day.. shes in kinder.. hers is for speech the shes 2-3 years behind in how letters are pronounced . it broke my heart when another teacher tested her and gave her an unsatisfactory on her progress report on letter sounds because shes extreamly intelligent just leaves letters out of words or mispronounces them. she knows how they sound it just doesnt come out the way its suppose to sound..they think its caused by a hearing lost from having so many ear infections before getting tubes. my biggest fear is bullying because she has came home upset because some kids made fun of her
