Family doctor for pregnancy/delivery?

posted 26th Oct
Has anyone seen a family doctor for their entire labor and delivery? I'd never really heard of that before, but it's looking like that's the route I'll be going this time and I'm not exactly sure how I feel about it.

I used a midwife team with DD #1 and am using the same team with baby #2.

OB's are good if you have a complicated pregnancy that requires more monitoring. Otherwise a GP is fine. If you have midwifery service available in your area (licenced) then that is by far my preference. They provide the best combination of quality of care and expertise.

I just went to my family doctor for my 1st two pregnancies. Had a good experience with both. With my 3rd LO, i was high risk so i had to deliver at a different hospital and needed an OB.

My OB/GYN is also my family practitioner! He knows all about my pregnancies and since he has known my kids since before they were born he knows all about everything! lol Also it is more convenient then trying to remember which DR day it is! lol I can get my prenatal checkup and the kids can get their checkups in the same room! He has been my DR for over 6 years now!

I did and he was absolutely amazing. He made sure that he was on the call list if I were to go into labor while he was NOT there. he had a note written in my file and I carried one in my purse that said nobody was to deliver my son BUT him   he's now NJ's pedi and I couldn't picture another doctor honestly.

Oh this is making me feel a lot better! I'd prefer a midwife, but my options are to be seen by the same family doctor my entire pregnancy and will deliver me (she'll be called in if she's not there when I go into labor) or be seen by the OB team which only has two midwives and zero guarantee that I'll get to deliver with one of them. They are making arrangements to put me with a doctor who will be more open to natural birthing options than some of the others, so that part is good.

I went with a midwife team for my son, not really out of choice, it was the only choice they gave me! But they and I didn't get along and I had an on call doctor deliver instead. This time around I'll be with my family doctor the whole way through.

Many people here go to tricare and get switched to off post to Columbus Regional.

Is that Midwives at Trinity/Doctors?
I'm waiting to see how this goes before I make the decision to switch based on Columbus c-section rates vs. Benning's and based on a doula's recommendation that she finds MACH more natural friendly. It's definitely not set in stone that that's where I'll deliver though because I won't hesitate to change if I don't like the provider I end up with, but I'm at least trying it first.

Have you gotten a list of the providers you can choose from yet?
Yeah, it's at dr's hospital. It's a nice hospital.

I don't get to choose that I'm aware of. I asked for someone who would be accommodating to natural birthing and she said she had three physicians in mind and wanted me with one of them. I'll find out Tuesday I think who I end up with.
I know a couple of people who say great things about Doctors though! I just want to weigh my options first.

A lot of my friends are PCP's on post who handle pregnancies. I wouldn't have a baby on post after having a hysterectomy there. The nursing staff is awful. Dr was great though.
