Eating clean

posted 26th Oct
What can you drink if you eat clean? Are teas and coffee ok if there is no added sugars or creamer? What about honey? is it considered processed? Are 100% fruit juices ok? Oh, and what about milk? Does it have to be organic, or something like almond milk instead? Thanks for any help!

You kinda just go your own way. I eat clean, organic foods mostly. Always check the ingredients. Coffee and teas would be fine I would think. Homemade juices are best. Check the honey. A lot of it is just processed sugar. There should be some organic honey in that section of your grocery.

I haven't started yet

Tomorrow is pay day and I am hoping to go shopping and follow some of the guidelines. I just don't know where to start other than eating fresh fruits, veggies, lean protein.. I guess nothing processed, boxed, frozen, canned etc.

Yeah, that's kind of what I want to do. I already buy organic veggies and fruits, and mostly organic meats, and only the leanest meats, typically turkey. But I am guilty of muching on boxed snack foods.

As for drinks, it's usually water or tea, and an occasional cup of coffee. I just don't know what to do for the kiddos. My son drinks almond milk, but my daughter is on an hypoallergenic toddler formula. They usually don't drink juice, but they get it as a treat if we go out.

DD loves fresh fruits and veggies as snacks as well as Greek yogurt. I just bought some organic chips and salsa yesterday...yumm!

Just read the labels and check not only the sodium content but the ingredients.

Fortunately my kids love healthy food, and absolutely love greek yogurt! Thank you, that sounds so much easier than I was expecting.

Depends if you are going vegan or just dairy or just meat or just gluten or just gmo or just non organic free. There are lots if "clean variations.

I look for organic and non gmo as much as possible. (Gmo is soy, cotton, corn and canola) I am phasing out dairy but if I do use it I use raw and grass fed, hormone and antibiotic free and pasture fed animal products.

I stink non gmo and organic almond and coconut milk if I can find it. Watch out for carigeenan ad an ingredient.

I am in the process of going gluten free. I steam or slow bake or boil a lot of my foods but eat a lot raw. Watch raw greens if you have thyroid issues. I eat lots of nuts, seeds and super foods( maca, mullberry,
Chia, goji, hemp, sesame seeds, quinoa) in fresh smoothies

I drink reverse osmosis water and eat raw local organic hobey

So you are wanting to do Paleo then?

If so, limit juices for sure & even when you do keep it small amounts. Eat mostly veggies. Organic, preferably grass fed meats are ok. No sugars or grains, including corn. Although sugars from fruit (in limited amounts), 100% natural/organic agave nectar, 100% organic/raw honey are ok...agave nectar is the preferred choice among Paleo followers because it has a lower GI index than honey. No beans/legumes, including soy & peanuts, as well as peas. There are tons of great recipe and info sites on Paleo & I know I'm missing stuff. You mentioned almond milk which is great if you're doing Paleo, so is coconut milk...if you want to do Paleo 100% then stick with (or wean into) the ones without added sugars. Nuts are a great snack as well (although, again, not peanuts). There are also some great pages on FB for Paleo as well, like Cave Girl Eats, Nom Nom Paleo, etc.

Sorry if my post was in random order, just typed stuff as it came to mind.

Oh, if they like the yogurt, I put it in a ziplock bag and cut the tip off, squirt "dots" of the yogurt onto a cookie sheet covered with wax paper and freeze them. DD loves them!

Oh, curious about the "avoid raw greens if you have thyroid issues"??? Not sure I've heard about that before...

Thank you ladies! I guess I need to do some more research, I'm not exactly which I would like to follow, other than doing organic and cutting out gluten. Thanks for all the info!

I loved going Paleo for cutting out gluten, because apparently some of the other stuff you're supposed to avoid (like soy, excess sugars, etc.) can cause some of the same issues as gluten depending on why you have an issue with gluten. For me, I've got a sensitivity/allergy to it, but I also have joint pain/arthritis issues, along with reflux, dairy sensitivity, etc. so it's basically the best diet I've found to work for me. I suggest trying a few different ones (for at least a 3-6 month period at a time) until you find what works best for you &/or you & your family. I did that & tried gluten free in 2009-2010 (but without cutting out all grains), went vegan for a year in June 2010 & then in June 2011 decided to try Paleo.
