Autism.....

posted 24th Oct
So, in the past couple weeks I've been thinking about milestones and my 3 1/2 year old son, compared to many others his age. I grew concerned and wrote all my concerns down. For instance, he rarely makes eye contact and if he isn't familiar with you he wont look at you at all, he is always repeating words And phrases, he doesn't talk very much and although his hearing is fine, he is having difficulty and delays in speech, he will potty train and do great then he will relapse and have to start over, he spends a lot of time organizing or setting his toys or other objects up in a certain way and is upset if it gets messed up, he gets upset of his routine is disrupted.... and about a week ago, we took him in for a check up and shared all concerns with the Dr and that's when she suggested that he may have some type of form of autism, and is getting him 3 referrals for I guess a development specialist, and an early intervention, and I forgot the other one... but I guess they will be screening him to see if the suspicion is true... what can I expect at these screenings? Anything I can do to help prepare him? Etc.? I go back to the Dr with him tomorrow to get the referrals...

Lots and lots of questions.
About your son, his routines, his physical health, history, home life, etc.

Lots and lots of question based evaluation, 'scale of 1 to 10' and also a meeting with the doctor personally.

They may choose to see you back again, or make a determination.

It isn't going to be a SURPRISE! Your kids has autism you're F'ed. ( I thought it would be). It was a lot of talking, and directing us into the right direction.

The good news is at 3.5 our kids are quirky anyways. It could be behavior that they grow out of, or it could be something more permanent. In which, is not a death sentence. My son is much like yours and was diagnosed with Aspergers this summer. At first it felt like death, but understanding his needs is making things better.

Good luck with your evals.

Thank you. Normally I would ask my MIL about all of this since my BIL has autism, but she just passed away almost a month ago.... she was a top RN on the east coast & worked mostly with Pediactrics so I always would ask her for help but now I just feel so lost and confused about everything.

I understand lost. My family doesn't really know much about any of this. So it's been difficult.

They will also probably evaluate your sons speech, cognitive abilities, that sort of thing.

As far as preparing him? My son has to be talked through everything we do in public. Okay now we are getting out of the car, now we walk up these stairs, now we have to sit down and wait, etc. Just do whatever you would do on a normal basis to keep him comfortable.

I really could use a friend as well that understand this.
