Scary home birth??!

I personally wouldn't risk it, but to each their own. I'm assuming that the doctor that agreed to deliver the baby had experience in delivering breech babies vaginally.

No. A doctor, not a midwife or doula, an actual doctor was there and assisted. I'm sure if he thought it was too risky he would of not had done it. He could lose his liscense if he performed a precedure or did something that was unethical. He could get into trouble and honestly, the person writing this is not a doctor. The writer doesn't know ALL the risk of a breech birth or the exact situation that the mother was in, in terms of her medical needs.

**Edited** Nothing against doulas/midwifes, they are more than capable of handling this but we all know doctors are trained in surgery so if worse case ... you know... They state in the article they would want to be surrounded by professionals. This is a professional.

I believe C-sections are only necessary like 5% of the time. There have been breech babies born ever since the time of man. Society (especially America, read on how they tried getting rid of midwives!) has this image that hospitals are meant to be the place to have a baby, when in reality, it should only be for high risk mothers.

I swear by Ina May Gaskin's book Spiritual Midwifery. I had DS in hospital because I wasn't too informed on it until 2nd-3rd trimester. Next time I will definitely go to a birthing center or have the baby at home because hospitals are just so unnecessary

She had a doctor (a licensed board-certified and well-respected doctor) who was willing to let her deliver a breech baby vaginally. I'd refuse a c-section in that situation too. I'd probably deliver in a hospital in that situation in case baby was in distress because I've lost too many babies to take unnecessary risks, but she had a doctor with her and I'm sure they monitored baby with a doppler.

How the hell do you think breech babies were delivered before they invented hospitals? Before c-sections? Before it was mostly safe to cut into a woman's abdomen----until recent history, c-sections were often deadly for the mother (and often the baby) so it was only performed when ABSOLUTELY necessary to save mom. Breech babies CAN BE BORN VAGINALLY WITHOUT ANY COMPLICATIONS as labor often pushes them into position naturally!

Yeah, I think J VDB's wife made a perfectly fine, healthy, and informed decision.

Ugh. Just another smurf outlook on home birth. People always pull the " BUT WHAT IF SOMETHING HAPPENED AND YOU COULDN'T GET TO THE HOSPITAL AND THE BABY DIED!" card. It's getting old. 9 times out of 10, there is an extremely experienced midwife (or several) at a home birth. They monitor baby with such diligence. They would be able to tell if there was a problem and transfer was necessary 99% of the time. It's not like just any schmuck off the street can call themselves a midwife.

  Plus, the media these days make birth look like things can happen so fast. & Hospitals have women pushin one minute, and getting an "emergency" c-section the next.. I wish people were more educated today about the natural birthing process

Me too! If I had given birth in a hospital with my daughter I would have almost definitely been forced into a c-section. My water broke and I didn't birth until 31 hours later. Most hospitals around here have a 15 hour limit, 24 hours if you push it, after water breaks. But my daughter was born perfectly healthy in water, 9lbs 3 oz, 10 apgar scores, and I didn't have a single tear. All because I trusted my body.

My son birthed at 9lbs 13oz after 36 hours of intense labor, 3.5 hours of pushing (they normally call for a section after 2 hours of pushing!) and over 27 hours after my water broke!

I did birth in a hospital, but I had a great doctor who listened to me and monitored him close and saw that his vitals were PERFECT the whole time.

I had my son at the hospital, went into labor on my own at home & didnt actually go in til i was 8cm. I was letting my body do its thang to have this baby and when my body would push during a contraction, my doula suggested we call someone in so then the nurse (aka stupid bitch) came in and made me get on the bed & lay on my back (i had been standing and leaning on my bed) & told me NOT to push bc my dr hadnt arrived to the hospital! So I back on the bed, and pretty much told her to shove it cause I was letting my body take over. She got frusterated and called a resident dr to come in and then they were like PUSH PUSH PUSH! DS's heart rate dropped so they shoved an oxygen mask on me, told me not to "moo" even though it was helping me, they said it wasnt effective and were yelling at me to push and push hard. They werent helping stretch my perineum, just standing there looking at my hoo-ha and reading the monitors   so when he started crowing, they pressured me & I took the damn oxygen mask off and pushed so hard it felt like the biggest smurf i had ever taken and DS came out all at once. I ended up with a 2nd degree tear   23 mins of pushing wasnt enough for my perineum to naturally stretch

Needless to say, I will never birth in a hospital again

That sounds like hell   I would have been mad if that was me too.. Hospital protocols always seem to interfere in one way or another. I wish I had been as informed as you ladies the 1st time around.. I naively trusted my doctor and ended up with my water broke, on pitocin, stuck in bed, just because my labor had stalled throughout the night before... I also had horrible back labor because he was in the wrong position, but couldn't turn after all that  ... then I ended up with a c-section when I was 'stuck' at 7 cm for like 45 min...  
Going for an HBAC this time around.. can't wait!!

who is she to say it wasn't worth the risk? It's none of her damn business! The babes was happy and healthy so whats the problem?

I'd try. I'd try anything before delivering in a hospital again.
