High fever question

posted 24th Oct
Temp of 104, would it be ok to wait until tomorrow to take him to the doctor? He's 8. My doctor is closed for the day, so the only options would be ER or Urgent Care, neither of which are ideal.

Depends- are you medicating him for it? Do you know what's causing the fever? And has he ever had a febrile seizure?

My friend's daughter had a seizure yesterday with a temp of 103.7... but she's only 2.
I'd take him to the ER, but that's just me.

If that is with medication go in. If not and it goes down with meds you should be fine

I just gave him Motrin, hasn't had time to work yet.
He's never had a febrile seizure, but has had high temps before.
He complained of a headache last night, no fever. This morning same thing. Around 1pm they called me from school bc he had a fever, 100.2
He says his stomach and head hurt. Just checked his temp, 104 and gave him the med.

No, it's before med.

Is he lethargic or hard to wake and is he drinking at least? Also have you given him a fever reducer?

If the medication isn't working and he seems out of sorts I would take him in.

I would take him in the next hour if it doesnt go down. My cousin had a 104 temp as a child and had a seizure, they told my aunt to put him in a ice bath until the ambulance got there. Thats all I remember from it

Ok. If you can keep it down with medication, I'd just keep an eye on him at home. The motrin should also help his headache. There's nothing they can do for a stomachache unless it's related to appendicitis or constipation, really. If you think he's dehydrated, it might be worth taking him in- otherwise I'd watch the temps, give the Motrin/alternate with Tylenol, and just make sure he's drinking.

See if his temp goes down with the Motrin. Give it an hour and then check again

Ice is bad because it can put a child- anyone really- into shock. Cool water/compresses is actually ideal.

Its what they told her to do over the phone, I believe his temp continued to rise and they were trying to bring it down as quick as possible.

My ped has told me to once when DS was around that if ever had a temp over 104 to immediately put him under cold water to try and bring it down before rushing him to the ER. In an emergency I would absolutely use ice. Its dangerous for your brain to have temps that high. Shock would be the least of my concerns.

I definitely don't think it was made up advice or anything, and I'm not trying to be defensive- just stating what I've dealt with at work. Causing the shivering can actually RAISE the body's temperature though. A local child died because his parents packed him in ice for a temp of 104-105. I believe he was 4.

oh jeez, I cant imagine she packed him in ice   by ice bath I meant a regular cold bath with handfuls of ice thrown in to keep the water from getting room temp.... lol packing with ice is kind of extreme

I agree. I see parents do some wacky sh** though. Makes me reconsider my job sometimes.
