Rabies and pregnancy

posted 27th May
About 2 weeks ago , I was bitten by a stray cat, he bit my ankles twice (trying to get my attention to pet him) and he did break the skin and drew some blood, then as i was about to stand up and walk inside, he tried to jump on my lap and a set of claws went into my chest, which also broke skin and drew blood.... the bites and scratches are healed and you cant even tell now...

I did go to the ER and they did document the marks, well now the base is calling me asking me to get a rabies series done, but I havent found anything that shows its safe for a fetus, im 19 wks pregnant. And also, the city cannot locate the cat, so they are worried that he might have died off with rabies...

Seriously, Ive seen this cat a million trillion times prior to being bitten, and infact i used to pet him before i got pregnant, and thats what leads me to think he doesnt not have rabies...

So really, I'm seeking others opinions, what do ya'll think? Should I just go in and get the series of 6 wks of shots 2 days a week...or wait and see...its been over 10 days and I feel fine...

Thats tough. Surely the cat didnt have rabies but if it did either way it would potentially be dangerous to the baby. What does your doctor recommend? If the cat had rabies would the shot do any good now after you had already been bitten? I dont know if I would want to take that risk of getting the shots if they werent safe.

Yeah I agree that it's best to ask the doctor if it's safe. They will know and you can always ask more than one doctor.

I did ask the dr, the er dr who is also 23 wks pregnant told me there is no data showing its safe in humans, but its safe in rats...but i dont think humans are close to rats.....

maybe i should call a vet clinic or 2 and ask...and im guessing other ob clinics..aside from the one im getting seen at since i hate it...

Agreed. You can never be too safe with bites from strays.

It is usually considered safe, but the benefits must outweight the risks. Your Dr will be the best one to decide that. They have access to rabies info from the cdc, if there's been reports in your area, etc. Symptoms take 4-6 weeks or longer so just because you feel ok doesnt mean you werent infected. That being said, The cat was most likely just pissy and decided to be a brat.

I think you have to weight the benefits vs the risks. I sure hope that cat doesn't have rabies...
