Lactose intolerance or Reflux?? advice?

posted 24th Oct
My son Dallas was born at 30 weeks (To see his story please visit my blog http://thesouthernjourney.blogspot.com/) He is now 7 months old (5 adjusted) and he was diagnosed with reflux while he was in the NICU the neo doctor said he would "outgrow it" by the time he came home...well..he didn't and he is now on Zantac. He pediatrician said that the valve will be strong enough by now and we would see less spit up or crying. and neither has happened. If anything the spit has gotten worse to the point he is constantly hungry and very fussy. We usually have to do his laundry 2x a day.

A friend of mine suggested that he might be lactose intolerant and that it might not be reflux. While in the NICU and coming home he was breastfed but because I have hypothyroid and PCOS my milk production eventually dried out despite everything I did to bring it back up. I feel so guilty he is having these tummy troubles now that he's on formula   I am now trying a different medication and hopefully I can re-lactate because I honestly feel that is the only answer. If anyone has any sucess with that please let me know...

anyway as for the dairy allergy how many of you mommas have little ones that have this or been through this and it came out to be a allergy and not reflux? what did you do? did soy help? I also heard Soy has too much estrogen in it and its not good to give babies...any thoughts? Thanks <3

The doctors told me switch to soy and I didnt have any problems after that with my daugther. Come find out she was lactose the whole time and that why she alway spilt it up. I when threw atleast 6 diffrent formulas and zantac none of them helped. But when I switched her soy she was fine and didnt have any issues. Every baby diffrent so I cant tell you forsure thats problem your baby has , I could be completely wrong.

DD had "reflux" until 10 months old when I finally put my foot down against her doctor's advice & switched her to soy formula when supplementing (I BF but had low supply due to PCOS as well!). She was a completely different baby! Ever since then, if she had anything with milk or gluten, she's throw up non-stop to the point we even ended up at the hospital once from it.

Trying soy won't hurt. In a situation like this, in my opinion & from my experience, it's better that your child not be in pain & dealing with those issues if the soy works out.

my friends little boy was switched at 3 weeks to soy ( I would look into other formula's. I dont' care for soy) and he still spit up but he not as much and he was much much happier! He is 22 months now and still on soy till he is two. but he can now have cheese, and yogurt. he may outgrow it by 2

DD had a milk protien allergy which is much more common in babies the lactose intolerance. She was on Rantidine and I breastfed so I had to cut all dairy out of my diet but Dr recommended Aluminium or neutrgiam if I was to give formula. At 18 months she's pretty much outgrown it. Although I'm still scare to give her a whole glass of milk haha.

They say my 3 year old has outgrown her protein allergy too, but she still drinks soy.

DD doesn't like any of it, soy, almond, coconut... She just drinks water and juice. We've given her cheese and yougart on a few occasions and a couple bites of our ice cream but I'm scared to go full boar.

Thanks for your replys ladies. It made me feel alot better to know other moms are going through this and put their foot down and switched to soy. Dallas is getting a swallow study done before we switch to soy the doctor thinks it might be his valve not closing properly which I hope isn't the case because the requires surgery   Hoping for a good outcome.

If it is a milk allergy..what is the best kind of soy forumla to get?

We are also using Nutramigen formula and it has resolved our issues. I tried to continue breastfeeding by first cutting all dairy, and then all soy. It still hadn't resolved and my ped said the next step was to cut all beef product and lentils/beans. I drew the line there and tried the Nutramigen. I have no regrets! The problems we were having from the allergy resolved within days. Good luck!
