re: The Fat Vaccine

posted 24th Oct
People can make healthy eating/lifestyle choices and still suffer from obesity. And not all obese people are lazy. There's still quite a lot we don't know about such a vaccine but I'm all for advancements in this area.

I feel eventually some sort of harmful side effect will follow with prolonged use!
I didn't read the article, but did it mention just how often the "user" would need to get these vaccines?

Well, they have found that a certain virus does indeed cause people to become overweight.. but only some who are exposed.
I wonder if this vaccine is to prevent that strain specificly.

If so more power to um, and if I have that virus, then lemme at it.

Seriously? Instead of putting some research into the notion that processed foods are altering human bodies and chemical reactions in them, we are going to find a way to inject more chemicals in the body? And how pleasant that we are going to call it the "flab jab".....

I just did some research on this vaccine. The vaccine targets the production of Somatostatin, a hormone that slows the release of human growth factor. Essentially, by reducing somatostatin, it allows the bodies natural release of human growth hormone (HGH) to rise. Kind of a turning back of the clock to a metabolism similar to our teenage years. Synthetic HGH has been known to cause other problems like joint and muscle pain, insulin resistance, arm and leg swelling and carpal tunnel syndrome and has been discouraged in the treatment of obesity.

The hormone ghrelin that stimulates hunger, is also lowered with the vaccine. In studies they have found that ghrelin plays a therapeutic role in stressful situations. It heightens anxiety during normal times and decreases anxiety when stress becomes acute. Without it, normal times are cool, but stressful situations send anxiety into hyperdrive. Messing with ghrelin levels could result in severe psychiatric repercussions.

I get nervous anytime something that messes with innate hormonal production. It problematic and general has unseen repercussions. We don't even really know the full range of things that hormones are responsible for.

I think the obesity vaccine is a bad idea. I also think that diet pills are a bad idea. I think the focus needs to shift from body size to health and lifestyle. Obesity isn't a disease, but often a symptom of something else... like a disease process, chemical alterations in the body made by a number of things, genetic propensity, or disordered eating patterns. Once someone is obese their set point weights have been driven up, and the body fiercely protected... so weight loss interventions are only effective 2-5% of the time. Focusing on health, instead of weight may have a more dramatic effect in treating the diseases that are correlated with obesity.

Yeah, I know. I was trying to be funny. Not always successful lol

The anxiety proponent of the vaccine really worries me.

I am not a huge fan of vaccines in the first place, I feel overstimulation of the immune system is the cause of the spike in autoimmune diseases.

Yeah, I'm not a fan either. I can see their usefulness in some instances... but not on the scale they're being used. And a vaccine that interferes with hormone production... yikes.

I totally agree. I'm also a firm believer of HAES. My weight is all over the place. I also have Hashimoto's which affects my thyroid. I also take multiple medications that are known to cause weight issues.

I'm overweight now. Not by a lot but it still doesn't matter to my doctor. I don't even see why they bother weighing me and commenting on my weight anymore. Over the past year I've lost, gained and lost weight again. It's been a total of approximately 70 lbs difference. I've been this way for over half my life due to my thyroid. It's simply more dramatic now due to the medications I'm on currently.

You can't judge laziness by a person's weight. Many people have invisible issues. FWIW, you can be at a normal weight and have high blood pressure, diabetes and heart attacks. My mom was a perfect example of this.
