Staph Infection

posted 27th May '08
Hey ladies. I just returned from the doctor yet again with my 22 month old. She has another staph infection. This is her 2nd one in just 3.5 months. The boil on her hiney is so big and painful. Does anyone else's children get these?? I had never even heard of staph until a year or so ago. Why does she keep getting it? Any ideas??

My little girl kept getting them when she was younger... Thank God, she hasn't had one in a while! They are awful! I was told to give her baths in bleach water about two or three times the first week (after the infection) and then once a week... then about once a month. I still do it about twice a month just to be on the safe side... Towels should be washed with a capfull of bleach in each load (i know some towels are colored but so little shouldn't hurt) Never mess with the boils (don't try to drain them yourself) it will only make it worse. Make sure when they give you the antibiotic you finish it. And also I was told to put the bacitracin ointment they give you in each nostril.. its supposed to keep the germ that causes it out...

Over 30 different types of Staphylococci can infect humans, but most infections are caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococci can be found normally in the nose and on the skin (and less commonly in other locations) of 20%-30% of healthy adults. In the majority of cases, the bacteria do not cause disease. However, damage to the skin or other injury may allow the bacteria to overcome the natural protective mechanisms of the body, leading to infection. (MedicineNet.com)

Minor skin infections are usually treated with an antibiotic ointment such as a nonprescription triple-antibiotic mixture. In some cases, oral antibiotics may be given for skin infections. Additionally, if abscesses are present, they are surgically drained. More serious and life-threatening infections are treated with intravenous antibiotics. The choice of antibiotic depends on the susceptibility of the particular staphylococcal strain as determined by culture results in the laboratory. (MedicineNet.com)

Yes, that's exactly the info I was given. Doc told me it was probably coming from my hubby or I. We have to put that cream in our noses as well. Doc told me that this boil she has now might have to be cut out if it doesn't drain out. After 3 days, it's still hard as a rock and very tender to her. She's so pitiful...I just hate this!!!

Her first staph infection was MRSA. We are waiting on these labs to find out exactly what kind this one is.

aww poor thing. thats not good. i had a staff infection november/dec on my butt cheek too. it hurt like a motha and i ended up in the ER thanksgiving night because my retard of a dr misdiagnosed me. sounds like she has an ingrown hair that keeps getting infected from her pee getting into it maybe? i dunno just make sure her diaper is fresh at all time. i know its hard to know exactly when a lil bebe goes pee, but try your very hardest and it might help.

What does having a bug have to do with not finishing her antibiotics?!? You should NEVER NEVER NEVER stop a course of antibiotics before completion, not only does it lead to reoccurring infections, it contributes to antibiotics resistance both in the person and the organism.

As to the OP questions, often times it is impossible to determine the source, but people who get staph infections are prone to get them over and over again, often times in the same or similar places. I hope its not MRSA again. After some of the things I've seen MRSA scares the crap out of me.

with MRSA they can't really tell you where it comes from...which sucks...they can get it from sitting in a cart at the grocery store, at a play ground anywhere

it becomes tons of handwashing and bleaching everything and being a clean freak...even tho i was like that before but it got worse from Natalee getting MRSA

Hi, my daughter is 2 1/2, she got her first staph infection about a year ago or so. Now she has been having them every 3-4 weeks. In May she was put in Hospital for 4 days because she got like 8-9 absesses all over her little body, they get so big and hurt her very much. Her Dr. keeps putting her on the same antibiotic (monthly), this cant be healthy for her. When she was in the hospital the culture we took was MRSA. Any good Dr's in area?? Please help.
