"Im Sorry, Cassidy Has Hearing Loss"

posted 23rd Oct
I can not even begin to tell you all how i feel. I can't eat, sleep, think. All i want to do is cry all day long.
This morning Cassidy had a appointment at Yale Hospital. We got there at 6:30 am and they took her at 7:30 am.. she had to get tubes put in to drain out the fluid in her ears, that way we could get a clear result. Around 10 a.m. we were called into a seperate room where the audiologist who tested her said she suffered hearing loss... i started balling my eyes out and wanted to yell at the lady for saying it with no care in the world. The audiologist said the only way to help the problem is hearing aids. When i asked her how long she would have to keep them in. she said most likely the rest of her life.. My heart sank. I'm so sad and words can not even explain how i feel. all i want is a hug and some encouraging words.. I can't take it.. Im just so confused.. i don't know what to do. HELP

How bad is the hearing loss? Like completely deaf or only partially deaf?

ETA: The reason I ask is because I am deaf in my left ear and slowly going deaf in my right.

I have a great aunt who is deaf, blind and mute. We call her a triple threat   She's very in tune. We've all learned different ways of communication. Some of us sign, she will lip read, I write words out letter by letter in her palm.

How do signing and lip reading work if she's blind?

Sorry I know that sounds totally rude, I'm just curious.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. My oldest just got diagnosed with hearing loss. She is with an adoptive family, so I don't feel the blow quite so clisely as you do, but my heart is with you.

She's not totally blind.. I should've worded better lol. She has some sight, hardly but some. Other times, I've seen her hold my face as I spoke so she could feel.

The best thing to do is to take one day at a time. How old is LO? I didn't go through your back posts to see. My brother had a little bit of hearing but slowly went completely deaf. Listen, it's not the end of the world, and I'm only saying this because I have lived through and am currently going through it, living with it. My brother got diagnosed at 3 with this and he's now 19. Yes it's hard but you have to take one day at a time. Did they talk to you about cocular(sp?) implants? My mom didn't go through with it for my brother, and I'm glad she didn't. My friends mother went through a lawsuit with hers and won, it did something to her and caused her worse problems. I am here for you if you ever need anything or don't know where to look for stuff. My brother started sign language classes which is what I'm sure you're going to have to learn b/c that's how she will have to talk with you(depending on how bad the hearing loss is, they will probably make her take speach therapy) Like I said, I don't know your entire story. My brother goes to one of the best deaf and blind schools in the U.S. even though it's not that many. Good Luck OP

I don't want to lighten your daughter's situation at all, but I was told the same thing as a child. Except i didn't have tubes put in my ears (even though it was court-ordered). It was said that I was hearing people as if I was under water. Every year in school I was given a note to give to my parents due to failing the hearing test. I've gotten through life fine thanks to god and your LO will too. I honestly never considered myself to be hard of hearing. I hear fine...idk. My point is though that try to stay calm things might not be as bad as they seem and your daughter will adapt.

I know that had to hurt hearing. Just know that this isn't the end. Cry tonight, maybe even tomorrow, but when you're all out of tears and think, "Now what" just remember that there are options. You can try getting a second opinion, getting the best options on hearing aides, seeking aid for the bills for the aides, and/or you both learning how to sign.

You're not alone. I have never gone through this so, I won't be much of a help but, I'm here if you need me.

Good luck on this journey mama!

How much hearing loss?

I have partial hearing loss in one ear, due to a ruptured ear drum as a kid. It really hasn't affected me much, though I was told I needed hearing aids as well (couldn't afford it, so we never got them).
