re: I can't get my point across without yelling.

I've had this pinned for future reference:

My mom was a big time yeller and I refuse to let the cycle continue after recognizing all of the psychological and emotional damage being yelled at did to me...but I did become a yeller because of all of that (I notice with my dog, and other relationships), so I want to be super prepared for the future.

When I told my son to clean his room today, 5 minutes into it he starts crying that his hands hurt and it's just too hard to clean his room. Everytime I ask him to clean his room, he gives me that crap. lol.

At 6 he understands consequences.
In my book, "because it's late and you need sleep to grow and be good tomoroow," is an adequate reason for having a set bedtime.
You COULD say, I will tell yu twice "for free." if i have to tell you a third time, it will cost you ________. The _________ is whatever his currency is like playtime with a toy or a favorite show. also, you could say that after the first 2 "free ones," it will cost him 15 minutes of earlier bedtime the next night. So, if you have to tell him 3 times, tomorrow night he goes to bed at 8:45 instead of 9.

Those are great tips, as well. I think the bedtime thing would really get his attention. I'm gonna try that in about 30 minutes. I'll let you know how it goes for me

Not only will a kid think HE can do whatever he wants, but that anybody else can also do whatever they want....even to him. Boundaries teach them (or should teach them, in a perfect world) how to expect to be treated as well as how to treat others.

Or so I figure. I could be talking out my ass, IDK.

Sounds like my son to the T. He's 4 and will peck at me like a bird over and over again to try and get what he wants.
