what does your four year old do?

posted 21st Oct
Are they able to spell there name? recognize letters? etc. Im watching my niece today and i was seeing what she knew. She isnt able to spell her name fully. her name is Kaylie and she says K A and then says LEE the sound, not the letters.i also had foam letters of the alphabet and she couldnt pick out simple letters such as the leter A. I havent figured out yet if she isnt able to do this because she isnt in a program and no one works with her on this or if she is behind in someway. Im going to be watchig her more often and would like to help her with her letters but i just wanted to see were your four year old is at and what i should expect from her.

My 3 year old has known the entire alphabet by sight and sound for at least a year. We just started working on his name though (he turned three today). He also has known all his colors and basic shapes for about a year and more complicated shapes like hexagon/octagon/trapezoid/etc for several months.

My dd turned 4 in June she can write, spell and recognize her name. SHe knows the alphabet, days of the week, months, colors, shapes etc But every child learns differently. I also taught her this on my own.

My daughter who is now almost 7 could not spell her name, recognize letters or numbers, and couldnt count past 20 until she started kindergarten. She was very behind compared to the other kids and she still is. But she caught up. It wasnt because we never worked with her or any other reason then the fact that she just didnt want to do it. We tried everything, including her teacher. After a while she just decided to try.

My daughter will be 4 in January. She knows her letter numbers up to 15 and can right some letter and apart of her name. I have been working on her with this stuff since she was 2 though. My dad is really big into the Leapfrog stuff so learning has always been in her life.

I would just work with her on it and go from there.

All kids are different. At 4, my daughter knew all her letters and how to write them, as well as her name, address and phone number, a bunch of sight words etc. My son however, knows the letters in his name, but cannot print all of them and knows all the letters in the alphabet (song) but can only recognize maybe 15 of them.

How deep into age 4 is she? That makes all the difference. My daughter is about to turn 4 and she can't spell her name but she recognizes majority of the alphabet and can count to 20 in 3 different languages.

Every child varies.

Things like that are often the case of the child not being worked with, but not always. Some children aren't interested. A smaller percentage are "behind" for reasons other than disinterest or lack of exposure.

That said, my 3 1/2 year old can recognize and spell his own name. He knows all his letters and their sounds, and can sound out simple words. We do homeschool preschool, but I don't push him. He just wants to learn. He prints many letters but rarely when prompted. I leave a dry erase board down for him to practice on as he desires.

she turned four this month. she seemed really interested in doing her letters so i dont think it has to do with her not wanting to do them. She doesnt have any consistency in her life. she is passed around to a different family member each day as a babysitter. im just worried that shes behind.

I bet it's just no one working with her. We read alphabet/letter/number/shape/etc books to my son everyday since he was 6 months or so (I read him Dr. Suess or other stories before that). So he's got all of them down from repetition.

IOt sounds like its just a lack of her being taught (not trying to be rude at all) if no one is teaching and working with her how can she learn it.

DD was 4 in July, but has been spellingher name since 2, its Ava-Rose, writting her name since 3 and reading writting and spelling her full name since about 3.5ish maybe younger its Ava-Rose Desimer (lastname)

She has been able to regonize all her letters and numbers since about 2-2.5 yrs old and some of them younger then 2. She is in her first yr of kindergarten this yr and even before she started she was reading at a grade 1-2 reading level and does math skills at a grade 1 level. She has memorized about 8 of are friendsd and families house phone numbers and cell numbers, she knows our address and her grandparents address, her date of birth including the year. etc...

I started all my kids on home work books at 2 yrs old 30 min a day and slowly moved up to 1 hr for my 4 yr old and 2 hrs for my 10 yr old. Doing basic stuff.
I wouldnt worry though all kids are different and do tings at a different pase. My 10 yr old is only reading at a grade 2-3 reading level and is in grade 6 ( she is learning disabled) only a mild learning disibility.

I started with my kids by making labels for everything in the house, for reading and learning sight words. Window/fridge/bed/dresser etc....my kids dressers are labeled on the drawers socks panties pants etc....so they will see all these words everyday and know what they are, reading is memory, once she has that down it will take off.

See my kids watch endless t.v as well, but they also have study time and more so since the schools here dont believe in homework, which I am glad for. It helps me to continue teaching them stuff I want them to learn lol.

Some people think oh well when they start school its the teachers job to teach them, but how does a teacher, teach all these kids the basics in such a short time throughout the day. With all those kids, they cant then our kids fall through the cracks..kwim?

Parents responsability to at least attempt to teach them the basics of read and reconizing numbers letters and how to spell their own name.

Its sad, that her mom is being lazy and lacking on her education.
