modeling and pagents

posted 19th Oct
Since forever almost everyone that has met DD has said that I should put her in modeling. I just always brushed it off. I've never liked pagents, especially for kids. SO was a child model and did pagents, and MIL is always saying DD should too. Tthe whole family knows I don't like it.

SO just sat down with me and said he'd really like to put her in it because she's so pretty, and she enjoys dressing up and strutting around.. umm doesn't every 4yr old little girl??

So it came down to the fact that I'm a horrible mother that doesn't want my child to experience things and blah blah blah...

I just feel that all those things just make little girls think that their looks are so important, and to make her prance around and be judged on her looks is so not what I want for my baby.

Please does anybody else feel this way about it? Am I crazy to be taking it this seriously?

I've heard it since the day DD was born.

"She's a doll baby! Her silver eyes would look great on camera" She was born with a glistening silver for her eye color.
"She'll be a movie actress one day, such a little heartbreaker!"
"Look at those gorgeous curls!"
"She's so good for the camera, you should have her be a model!"
"The _____ pageant is coming up, you should enter her!"

And so on and so forth.

We didn't pay it much mind until we got asked by all the portrait places here in town if we would do it, because DD does SO well for cameras... We've considered it... but not until DD can tell us if she wants to stop or not. I will not force my child to do something she dislikes.

I feel you. I have 3 girls who are soooo pretty but I refuse to put them in pageants too. Why?!? Because, look at those girls now!...They all look like little grown ladies...What ever happened to natural beauty?????. Those girls be wearing weave, high heels,...fake teeth, make-up and adult perfume... then to add insult to injury, they get on stage and be shaking their booty ...Oh heck naw...not my little girls. Little girls and parents now-a-days are starting to loose touch of what REAL beauty is.

I hate all the glitz in the pageant circle now. I want my daughter growing up knowing she is beautiful JUST the way she is, not needing enough makeup to caulk a hole in the wall, or perfect hair. Although Mommy spends a lot of time on her own hair due to puffy poodle curl syndrome... >.>

I have an adorable, blue eyed blonde hair little girl with great personality! (ok, I am sure every mother thinks their daughter is beautiful and capable of winning any contest) I think pageants are a ridiculous set back to everyone women have worked so hard to obtain. When you put your child in a pageant, you telling them that their looks are the most important thing, and that EVERYTHING comes second. Yes, I want my daughter to be proud of her beauty, but she needs to be more proud of her kindness and intelligence. People should be rewarded for their accomplishments, and looking like a doll is not an accomplishment!

You ARE aware that many pageants are more than just looks, right? If you bomb the questions, the talent, or have bad posture and poise, you lose, even if you're the most gorgeous girl in the world.

Then put them in a talent contest if they are so talented. Yes, I am fully aware that their are rehearsed questions that honestly do not show any intelligence, and I am going to lump posture and poise into the same category as beauty. However, the pageants I believe the op were referring to were the ones for toddlers and/or young children; they are not asking too many worldly questions on those stages. Are these young girls being asked to submit coloring sheets, or being asked to show their counting talents... I think not.

And I think you're being horribly biased. Many of the pageants I'm personally talking about are for scholarships or other school-related funding as a prize. If you enter the little miss ___ county pageant here, the top 3 get a savings bond for their college education AND a gift card for Build a Bear. There is nothing wrong with having a pretty child and entering them in pageants if the child wants to try it. And no, not all of the questions are rehearsed. You have to be thinking of these big, tv pageants or the Toddlers and Tiaras pageants. Not all pageants are like Honey Boo Boo child... I hate those kind myself. But the ones that are all about natural beauty... hell, I think those can help with self confidence. It can teach a kid to not give a damn about what anyone else thinks, and go out and shine for JUST a little bit, with a spotlight on THEM. Many girls love pageants JUST for that aspect.

Exactly. She's gonna be 5. She's so smart and enjoys everything. I just don't see it as being so productive to spend so much time and money to teach my daughter to act and stand and move a certain way, so people can judge her. Even the "natural " pagents, that don't do crazy make up, I still think they're stupid. SO thinks I'm crazy, tho..

The fact that it was said it is for "pretty child" says it all right there. Again, this is my opinion, I would not choose to put my daughter in a pageant. We will just have to agree to disagree.

No, I didn't say it was for 'pretty children'. I said if someone HAS a pretty child, and ALL parents think their kids are gorgeous, then there's no harm in it. Especially if the child wants to do it and asks to.

Agree to disagree.   If DD asks to try it, I won't stop her.

The basis of the pageant is on beauty, whatever side categories that have been slid in to make pageants less 1950's, the center is still on the child's looks. There are a plethora of other "self-esteem" building actives that will actually teach her something or provide a strong basis for being a productive member of our global society.

IF my girls ever did one, it would be for fun and they will need to request to do it. Plus they would not be allowed to do all that glitz mess. All natural and for fun only, If they can convince me to let them do it. I dont like that mess, they made something innocent into something horrible..I dont want my daughters to affiliate their looks with their ability to get money for college... but aside from that...If they want to win money for college or whatever then they can go into a talent contest..where they will be judged on their knowledge, and their looks are not a factor.
That is just how I see it...everybody is different.
