Help me with potty training my 4 year old...

posted 18th Oct
So back in April he was about 85% pee trained, wouldn't poo in the potty though. Then we had a traumatic family emergency that required a lot of travel and me being gone. He regressed completely and went back in pull ups. So yesterday I decide to try again, he had 1 pee accident but twice he caught himself before going and ran to the potty! Problem is, he still won't poo on the potty. The idea freaks him out and he starts screaming if I suggest it. He likes to hide in his room to poo but does it in his undies/pull up.
Sorry for the novel, anyone else deal with this? How did you work through it?

that's hardly a novel! just a short li'l paragraph.

im sorry i dont have much advice. my kids both took to potty training right away at 20 months, and 25 months respectively.

this sounds so gross and silly, but i put the baby potty in my daughter's closet and she would only go in there to pee/poop until she turned 2 and started using the big potty regularly. maybe try letting him make and decorate his own potty corner and get a chart to give him stickers. the sticker / reward system tends to work very well for my children for anything i want them to do! i keep a little basket full of cheap (think dollar store!) toys, coloring books, art supplies wrapped in wrapping paper then placed in the basket. so many stars or wahtever = choose a present.

When my son would pee in the potty but not poop I bought a small toy he wanted and put it up high but where he could still see it and told him he could have it after he pooped in the potty. It took a couple days but he finally did and then he was over the fear of it.

My daughter would hide too. I just had to make sure I caught her before she went and coax her to the bathroom. I made sure she knew I would leave her alone to do her business and to call me when she was finished. She did cry at first but I tried not to give in, kept it lighthearted, joked around a bit and really reiterated what a big girl she was for pooping on the potty. I just plopped her on and left the room and shes been going ever since. Good luck

He has a truck he knows he will get if he poops in the potty but I guess it's not incentive enough..

Lol, if I just plopped him on the potty he would just get off. He's 43 in and 45 lbs, big boy.

This is a great idea! I used a clear jar on the fridge but I think wrapping things would make it even more exciting (and means I could probably get more things out of them lol).

it really does make it more exciting! you can even wrap little things you already have. the fun of it is the actually unwrapping LOL
