Bili

posted 17th Oct
My baby was born at 35 weeks, and didn't have to be in the NICU at the time. The first week he was yellow and to find out he had jaundice. His levels keep going up and down, 4 days ago it was 21! & got a call from the doctor to go the hospital asap, which freaked me out. We were there for 3 days and got sent home after becaue his level went down to 6, now its up to 13! This scares me, i hate to see him get blood drawn every 2 days. I feed him every 2 hours, he poops and still this damn jaundice doesn't go away   Does anyone know where i can get a bili blanket?

The hospital had a company that they had a contract with. They sent one home with us. Are you breastfeeding?

you'll need a prescription from a doctor for the bili lights or blanket. A home health agency will set you up with one. I'm kind of surprised the hospital didn't do that already.

They never told me about the bili blanket. I found out on here about it. I really wanted to stay at the hospital to the bili level was down to 3 but they sent me home when it was 10 :/

You may have to stop and give him strictly formula for 2 or 3 days. As much as that sucks, breastfeeding can actually make the biliruben keep circling through him. That's exactly what happened with me and DS. I hated the fact that he would need formula for a few days but as soon as we did that his levels dropped drastically and then finally it went away and I returned to breastfeeding.

are you keeping him in the sunlight at all?

My son's bilirubin started out at 15 or 16...it took well over a month to go down.

Really, i did hear something about BF causing bilirubin. They did give him formula the first week for low sugar too. How does formula help?

They just advised me to do the formula for a few days until I came back to get it checked again. But said that ultimately it was my decision. But at that point I didn't care, I was willing to do anything to help my little man get rid of it. I'm glad I did too because it seriously went right away after that. They gave me the formula too. Formula will make the bilirubin get out of him. He'll poop it out instead of it circling through.

I understand! I was a mess the whole time DS had it. I hated seeing my tiny little preemie under those lights, he was so scared. I was running on maybe an hour of sleep and wanted to punch the nurses and dr's lol. It was horrible. Giving him the formula was amazing (even though he hated it and ruined a lot of clothes from spitting up). I hope it helps but I'm sure it will! I would do it for AT LEAST 2 days, maybe 3. Then let me know how it goes!
