Synagis??

Can anyone give me info on this, our pediatrician recommended it but didn't give any information on it. I got a call from a pulmonologist yesterday to see if we were planning on getting it for our twin sons, and I am waiting on a call back to set an appointment. If your LO gets these shots or you have any info, it would be greatly appreciated. TIA

My daughter got them for 3 seasons. IMO they are GREAT. They really aren't a vaccine so much as a medicine that is given monthly to help a child fight off RSV if they get it. For kids with lung issues or heart issues RSV can at least put them in the hospital and can actually kill them. It's a HUGE risk to them.

So we did them. She got like two shots her first season, then a full course the next two seasons. This is the first winter she's not getting them. They aer hard to qualify for insurance wise (they are like over a grand a shot without insurance) but if you qualify? I'd get them. . . .

Wow, I had no idea. I feel like no one informed us of what our preemies are at a greater risk for. I hate our pediatrician but haven't been able to change yet. The pulmonologist said they were going to check with my insurance then give me a call back to schedule an appointment.

First of all, you can always send me a PM if you want. I had a 27 weeker (she's almost 3 now) so I went through a lot of this stuff. I know how scary and confusing it can all be, and I was only handling one kid, now two!

Yes, it's a monthly shot. So it isn't a one time thing. They do a shot every month usually from Oct or so until April or so. They never made my daughter sick or feel bad (well, I mean, any shot will hurt, but no fevers or anything). RSV is VERY VERY scary. It's much more dangerous then the flu. In fact, more kids are hospitalized and dye from RSV every year than from the flu if I recall correctly. It's even more dangerous for kids with lung issues.

My daughter spent a lot of time on a vent, so her lungs were damaged. She came home on o2. Also she had a PDA ligation surgery (on her heart) so that's why she qualified for so long.

thank you
I guess i took the fact that my boys did so well considering they were born at 32 weeks for granted. I figured that because no one took the time to inform me, that they were not at greater risk. I guess i should do more homework.

Well, at 32 weeks they will be at an elevated risk. Being twins Dr's will be more cautious then they would be with a singleton preemie. Do they have any heart or lung issues? If not, they may not qualify. It's all sort of up in the air, so I'd guess maybe that's why they haven't told oyu much yet, because they don't know for sure if they qualify for it. My daughter got her first in the NICU before she came home.

They have no issues. Hopefully i get a call back sometime this week. They have medicaid so I know it will take a while, they are slow about everything.

My son was born at 24 weeks and he got the Synagis shot for a few RSV seasons. The first time he got RSV while going through the treatments...Every place has different RSV seasons therefore the scheduling will be at different times but it's a series of shots, usually your pediatrician or specialist will set the first appointment up.

i also have 32 weeker twins, born in May
we didn't get the OK from our insurance, so no shots for us.
the girls spent 27 days in NICU and came home with no issues.

they are too young for the flu shot this season, so my SO and I got them as soon as we could (for ourselves, I mean)

its very benefical in my option as rsv can really be fatal in preemies

Where I live, you have to qualify if you want insurance to pay for the shots. They are 900 bucks a piece! Our Pedi recommended we get them, since the boys were 33 weekers, and sent off for out insurance company to pay for them, and then I got a letter in the mail saying that we'd been denied because they boys didn't have any lung problems when they were born.

Okay. I'd personally take it as a good thing. Good luck! My LO did great with them and I hope your boys do great too.
