Any momma's who's children recieve SSI?

posted 15th Oct
I was just curious as to how long it took anyone to get approved, and about how much you get each month? If you don't mind sharing. We are applying for SSI for my daughter Ness who was born with Down Syndrome, my mother said she was pretty sure she would get approved for it, and it could help with all of her expenses, though not as expensive now, i'm sure she will have many more expenses in her lifetime. My mom got SSI for my little sister who was mentally delayed (We were adopted, but my mom is pretty sure she had Autism.) So she knows all the qualifications and everything, and she's been helping me fill everything out. Anybody getting SSI have anything about the process and getting approved and backpay, all that jazz, have any info that I should know? I also have a phone appointment with them at 12:30, anything I should have on me when they call?

I'm in the same boat you are, our phone appointment is tomorrow.

Did you have to get anything notarized? I know one of the papers that you fill out asks for a witnesses signature...I'll ask tomorrow too because I want it all to be filled out correctly. I dont want my sons benefits denied because I couldnt get the paperwork right.

you will get approved and it usually hits within the 1st 90 days max but for you maybe sooner. usually they give you medicaid to cover the medical costs and her treatments from there on out should be free but i cant make a promise also they if you ask they should cover any past medical bills, if it is directly related to her disability but you got to bring it to their attention... Being deaf runs in our family so the amount you get depends on the state you live in and the cost of living there. My sister gets nearly 600 a mo.

also if it takes more than 30 days to approve you, they will back-pay you to the date of application.

There was something that was sent to us that needed a witness signature, but I was told by my mom that anybody could sign it, so my daughter's dad signed it. My mom told me it was just so they know you had a witness to show that you filled everything out correctly. And i'm scared about that too, that I didn't fill something out correctly, or that I missed something that would affect us getting approved or not.   I've super busy with my new daughter and my 21 month old, I forget a lot of things, and i'm afraid I might have forgotten something important or won't know how to answer all of their questions correctly.

I hope we've filled it out right then <3

My husband is out of town so I'll ask one of my sons therapists to sign it, thank you!

When you do the initial application, they will send you packets to fill out giving information about her doctor's and when she was diagnosed, how she is mentally or physically delayed due to her disability, etc.

It takes anywhere from 90-120 days to get notified about a decision. She'll probably get approved the first time around, but most people NEVER get approved the first time around.

If she gets denied, you'll have a certain amount of time to appeal the decision and then you'll get a date to go before a judge and explain in person why she needs disability.

If you get approved the first round, it will be anywhere from 4-5 months until you start getting checks. If you get denied and appeal, it could be anywhere from 9 months to over a year depending on how busy the courts in your area are.

if anything is messed up they will call you in to fix it and the case worker will sign as a witness to the corrections

damn!!!!!! what state are you in?????? j/k...every a state is different. But for a situation like hers as long as she has medical documentation, a properly filled out application, and a signed statement from the child's doctor everything should run smooth ( I cant promise). But each state is different. My application was put-in in Fl and approved the first go around.

We did all that online, filling stuff out about her doctors and diagnosis's and everything. Next thing we got was a packet saying when our phone appointment was.

I don't know if it depends on what your child has or not, but I've seen people get letters of approval before 90 days. Lol. And i'm pretty sure she will get approved, because she has a disability that won't ever go away, she will have it for life, you know? My little sister had Autism from what my mom speculates, and I believe she was approved first time around. But I was too little to remember much of that stuff. All I remember was that she got checks every month for anything she needed and new clothes and everything and I was jealous. Hahaha.

Thank you for all this information tho! It really helps   Would you know by any chance about how much one can get a month for SSI? Like, the maximum amount of benefits they can receive?

I believe her situation is different because she's applying for SSI benefits for herself, right Terra?

I'd be willing to bet money that Ness gets it without any trouble, but that's just the process I was taught. I'm in the middle of it right now.

As for the amount you'll get, there's either partial disability or full disability. It isn't like Food Stamps where it's based on need. Your daughter can't work (lol obviously  ) so she'll get full disability. I'm pretty sure it's the same as adults. It varies by state, but I've never heard of less than 550 or more than 800. Here in AR they're saying I'm going to get close to 770 IF I ever get approved. =[

I'm almost four months into it, but I am DEFINITELY going to get denied the first round because I am so young. I have fibromyalgia and bipolar disorder, and I just can't be out in public for much at a time....but you can't explain that on paper. Idk.

Ness is just as perfect as any other baby, but you guys are going to have to work harder and she is going to have problems other children would never even be able to fathom. She'll get the help she needs just for that.
