re: Breast Feeding in Public, how do you feel about it?

posted 15th Oct
At first I was a bit shy about it but 3 months on I just flop it out. I'm feeding my son and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it

I think it is perfectly fine to nurse in public. However I believe that a covering is the best choice, because I know that if I were walking around with children I would not want them looking at a woman's breast hanging out, its easier to explain if she is breastfeeding while covered up.

How is it easier to explain?

Young children should grow up being around women who expose their breasts to breastfeed rather than being exposed to women who expose their breasts in the media... i.e glamor modelling.

Then they will learn breastfeeding is what breasts are put there for, children will fully understand better if they can see it being done.

I have never and will never cover up when breastfeeding.

So in a "media terms" I find it best to keep it PG in public. Just my opinion.

I agree, my three boys 9 6 and 5 don't even get phased by someone nursing exposed or unexposed. They understand it. But I guess I never sugar coat anything with them either. Kids are curious and have to be taught. So I taught them.

I dont cover in front of MY children but i show respect to other families and cover for them. MY kids think it is normal and know all about it but not everybody wants their kids exposed to that. We need to respect their wishes as we would want them to respect ours, when it comes to our children...... Just like other people do things and think it is fine but I dont agree so I would appreciate if they did not expose my children to those things against my will because they think it is okay.

Wow.
It's not like I am walking around with my boobs out squirting them at people.

I will never cover when I breastfeed. If people are uncomfortable with it then that is their problem. Simple answer... don't look.

I cannot believe there is still some prejudice against women nursing in public... is it a wonder why so few women choose to breastfeed these days when they are made to feel ashamed about it and have to cover up?

I never felt "ashamed" to breastfeed, but I did chose to do it privately.

I think you're lumping alot of different reasons together.

Fair enough if you want to cover up but I think a lot of women feel like they have to cover up.

No, dont take it that way...I love nursing..and I do it in public too..It's not being prejudice or trying to make another mom feel ashamed of it..because I'm proud too. i use a cover that allows me to see baby and baby to see me when in public is all. To respect the wishes of others. adults will turn away after catching themselves looking but a child wont and it's not fair to their family when we bust a boob out and allow our baby to suck it in their face and tell them to get lost and explain it the best they can to their child. that is all I'm saying. i cover so at the least if their kids have questions they can better explain w/o the awkward moment. just showing them a lil respect.

I have had people make me feel like smurf for nursing in public and my friends have experienced the same prejudice. It made me ashamed and want to cover up, but to me it is the most natural thing in the world and I'm not gonna hide it. People should have respect for that too.

I respect the fact you want to cover up, what I don't respect is people making me feel like I need to cover. It's personal choice.

They do respect our rights to nurse our babies. That is why it is legal to nurse in public. All people ask is for us to cover when we publicly nurse. ...Give a little-Take a little...ya know.... MUTUAL RESPECT for another persons rights and being EQUAL VOICES.
