Breastfeeding

posted 11th Oct
Just had my baby boy on Tuesday and I love breastfeeding. It is so adorable how he acts when he knows he's getting food, he makes the cutest face. (: Anyways, I was wondering if it is normal for it to hurt pretty bad when they first latch on. It's like he starts sucking really hard and it is painful but the pain goes away really quick. I heard it wasn't supposed to be painful at all so I don't know if I'm doing it right or not. When he's done, my nipple sticks out evenly, so I think I have him at the right angle and everything. It just hurts when he first latches on.

It shouldn't hurt if he's latched on properly. He might have a bad latch then smoothes it out after a few sucks.

Yup, even when you have a good latch. It will take a few weeks for your nipples to toughen up.

Some people say that any pain is not normal

But for me, I was in pain (not all as bad as the beginning) for 2 months.

It will get better

My nipples hurt for the first few weeks after my first. Just them getting used to being munched on lol. Your uterus also contratcs when you breastfeed so that can cause pain aswell.

I was told it is normal for it to hurt for a few seconds/minutes when they first latch. It should not hurt the entire time you're nursing. It sounds like what you described is normal. I have been nursing for 13 months now, And did not experience that pain, But I do know many women who have.

People always used to say to me 'if it hurts then they aren't latched properly.'

While that is true is some cases, it isn't, especially when breastfeeding is established it can sometimes hurt.

Mine were sore for the first like 2-3 weeks maybe. It takes time for your nipples to 'toughen up.' Remember they aren't used to being sucked on all the time.
Also babies learn to breastfeed just as much as mums, some babies are natural, some babies take a couple of weeks to get it right every time.
Just keep going, use nipple creams and cold compresses when they get sore, if it still hurts a minute into the feed I was always told to pop a finger in their mouth to break the seal then get them to latch on again.
Good luck

My daughter is 5 weeks and it still hurts me when she first latches. I've been working with a lactation specialist and she said for some woman when they first latch it can hurt but shouldn't hurt for longer than a minute if it does the baby isn't latched correctly.

It only hurts for ten seconds maybe, so I think I might be fine.
