Infant's Diet & Microwaving Food

posted 11th Oct
So LO is about 6 months old.
He's started solids and loves them.
At this point he's having avocado, banana, peas and squash.
I cooked him up some sweet potato to try tomorrow... so we can add that to the menu. I mix his fruits/veggies with iron fortified rice cereal.
What are some other first foods that are good for him to start with?

He still nurses at LEAST 6-7 times a day. I feed him maybe an eighth of a cup of a fruit/veggie mixed with cereal 3x a day. Today, though... he ate his squash and didn't want to nurse until 4 hours later.

So here comes my question.... how much breast milk should be still be taking in at 6 months of age in the least?

ALSO- I know you aren't supposed to microwave breast milk because it can kill the nutrients in it. How does that apply for heating up foods in the microwave. For example... I have steam-in-bag veggies, and the pods I put the baby food in when I make it are insulated... so they don't heat up when I place them in hot water. Is it okay to microwave his babyfood for a few seconds so it's not so cold?

Rice is no good. There was a recent news report about the rice and arsenic. Try using oatmeal or barley.

Arsenic in organic rice cereal? Somehow I don't believe that.

Consumer Reports, the independent consumer watchdog group, has conducted analysis of a number of different rice products, finding that an array of them–including organic rice baby cereal, rice breakfast cereals, brown rice, and white rice–contain “worrisome” levels of the carcinogenic toxin arsenic. Arsenic is not regulated in food, though the government does have a standard of 10 parts per billion (ppb) for arsenic in drinking water. From Consumer Reports:

Don't they need the rice cereal? I was told by my pediatrician that they needed it when they first started eating solids because of it's health benefits and added iron.... ??

No Rice cereal is completely unnecessary.

It is totally normal for LO to cut back on the breast milk once solids are introduced. DD has only been nursing 4 times a day for the past 3 months. I EBF in the morning and at bedtime but she gets her solids with her two midday feeds. I zap her food in the microwave for 15 seconds but make sure to really mix it up and test it on my lip before giving it to her. It's just like reheating our own food. I tried giving DD cold veggies and that was a no go! She wouldnt eat them

They absolutely DO NOT need rice cereal.

I would never give my children that... There's no nutritional benefits, plus its been proven to contain some unsavory things that I think someone has touched on.

I told you to try oatmeal! Please, use oatmeal instead of rice. :-)
