Cytotec?

posted 11th Oct
I'm getting worried after reading about it on here. Today my OB decided that she wants to induce me Monday due to baby's abdomen measuring under the fifth percentile, she's looking rather small too. My first two were both over 8 lbs so we weren't expecting this. I will be 39 weeks on Tuesday. She wants me to come in the night before for them to start cytotec I am guessing because I'm only 1cm and 50% effaced still and when I brought up that I've heard bad things she didn't act like it was and said they don't have cervadil at my hospital when I asked about it.

She said what could happen if there were problems is it could cause too many contractions or too strong of contractions and put the baby under stress. Well that's a big deal, and I'm worried. If I refuse it what will happen? She will probably try to talk me into it since I'm not dilated much and act like things won't work right without it...I hate having to go against her she delivered my first two and I like her a lot but I care about my child and myself more so now I've gotta figure this out...

cervadil and pitocin are always options too that worked just fine for women before cytotec came along. Did she say if your baby was just small in general (like the whole baby measured in the 5th percentile)? or did she say if the head was a fairly higher percentile than the belly? Has she taken these measurements over a 2 - 4 week period using at least two u/s for comparison?

She is measuring 6 lbs 5 oz, the head was bigger, she said the abdomen was what concerned her. This was the first growth ultrasound i've had. She said they don't have Cervadil though   .

I know she will be doing the pitocin, that's what I was induced with, with my first two..they were both overdue though. Can they start with just pitocin if the cervix isn't very favorable?

Don't do it. It could cause a placental rupture and kill the baby.

I may be wrong, but that's what I read on here somewhere.

I've read way too many stories where it caused a placental abruption and the baby was stillborn

I would refuse. There has to be more options.

I agree with the others. I've heard and read too many bad things about cytotec. I'd refuse it unless you had no other options.

That's the thing, I don't know what my other options are. Maybe request to just start pitocin and see how it goes, and then have my water broken when they normally would? I know as soon as she broke my water with my first two, the contractions came on hard and strong..and with my second daughter it was only just over 2 hours later that I had her.

the cervidil will soften the cervix like the cytotec would but is much safer. If it were me I would insist on a second u/s done about a weeks after the first one maybe two if you're comfortable waiting that long, since one growth scan is not generally considered an indication of a piece of anatomy measuring smaller than the other parts until a second one is done because measurements can be off even due to babies position. I've never heard of an ob recomending an induction preterm with only one u/s, I've only ever heard of doing it will two to compare. And the reason I asked about the head was because sometimes the conern with a smaller abdomen and normal or larger head is that the baby isn't getting enough nutrients and is portioning what s/he is getting to the vital organs like the head and stealing from growth in other less important areas like the belly and limbs.

I'm not really sure...I was going to suggest Cervidil (sp?) but I saw you said the hospital doesn't carry it? that's odd..but i guess each hospital is different. I'd definitely see if they can just do pit then...I'd tell her again you're really not comfortable using the cytotec. Any good doctor will take their patients concerns into consideration. If she keeps pushing and you're really adamant about it then try a new doctor!

Ah yes, she didn't say to me IUGR but from what i've read on here that's probably what is going on, the second type where the brain and head are measuring fine but the abdomen is small. I personally am too anxious and nervous now to wait, in case there is a problem...like I said my first two were much bigger and there was no concern. I'm term, just not full term, and my original DD based on my last period was this coming Sunday lol. I know the ultrasound done in the beginning saying I was 9 weeks was probably more accurate though, giving me the 23rd as a DD.

Maybe DH and I can have plenty of sex the next two days and that will soften me up and all? I just don't think I want to risk the Cytotec   .

the sperm might help soften you up or maybe try evening primrose oil?

Ah yes, I thought I had read that you were only 35 weeks which is why I suggested maybe waiting a week but if you're already term then if it was me I'd be wanting to get the show on the road too! I would do what CeCe suggested and use the primrose oil, you can take it orally and vaginally, I'm just not sure on the dosages for each but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to google it. Good luck!
