HELP FROM EXPERIENCED MOMS PLEASE!!!!

posted 11th Oct
Hi,

I really need some first-hand experience advice instead of just statistics. This is my first child and she's 2.5 months old. I only gave her a pacifier at first to help her nap during the day, then she started wanting it during the time she's awake. She was sleeping through the night or just woke up once, but the last few days she started getting up at all hours of the night crying for her pacifier. I started with cutting the tip but that only made her more upset and she was sucking in a lot of air, so I decided to go cold turkey. Today is the third day but she's still crying for it. I feel really bad bc I know some babies NEED to suck in able to soothe themselves but how can it be good for her to be so dependent on it now when she wasn't like that before? I'm sure she's unhappy about needing it so much too bc she cries more and doesn't sleep as well too.

Should I continue with weaning her or do you think I should give it back to her? The reason why I'm considering giving it back to her is bc she's only 2 months old but the reason why I feel I should stick to it is bc she actually slept through the night again since I took it away. I'm really stuck.

Your opinion and experience is greatly appreciated.

Imo, she's still too young to wean. If she wants to suck to calm herself, it seems mean to take it away so soon.

at 2 months old? i would give it back.
are you supposed to cut the tip? won't that give her terrible gas from all the air?
i don't mean to sound bitchy. my dd never took one, so i don't know much about them.

I think she's plenty young enough that if she still wants her paci you should give it to her.

I've never heard of cutting the tip...why would you do that?
My first DD never took a paci. We bought them and she never liked them.
Second DD just turned 3mos yesterday and she likes her paci just to sleep. She'll let it fall out. When I breastfed she loved the comfort of sucking so she sometimes just likes it for soothing purposes.
I'd give it to her.

She's only 2 months old, so I say let her have it. It will click in her mind that she can suck to feel better and may move to hands and fingers later, but right now I would let her have it.

Is she not hungry and just wanting the paci? She might be going through a growth spurt right now which would be disrupting her sleep cycle. Growth spurts have been known to be uncomfortable to kids too, which may contribute to her desire for the pacifier

Holy smurfing christ

Give it back! When I was a "first time mom" with a newborn/infant I had enough brains to know you don't try to wean them that early. Hell my THREE year old still sleeps with a paci.

Smurf you are a piece.

Some parents swear by cutting them down to wean their children off of them, but it's really a stupid and risky idea. Cutting the tips off poses a choking hazard

DD found her fist and is working on getting only her thumb lol. It's so funny bc the house can be quiet and all the sudden you hear this loud sucking noise, and sure enough Jazzy has her fist in her mouth haha.

So they lose the desire/pleasure from sucking. This is done on TODDLERS.
