Babyproofing issues, help please

posted 10th Oct
How on earth do I babyproof these two areas? My Ds is determined to hurt himself. :S

First, fireplace hearth
He climbs onto it and dives/falls off of it. He also stands up and tries to cruise along side of it which results in him falling and hitting his head on the brick.

Tv sitting on the hearth is no longer there.

Air vent.
Its in the middle of the floor so I have no idea how to keep him from messing with it. I'm afraid hes going to get his fingers stuck.

You can see the position of the airvent in relation to the room in the top picture, its to the left of the island.

ugh, cant link video. one sec

best pic I can find

for the fire place, i put a long blanket, folded, over the edge...just something soft would work. it's not very appealing to the eyes but better than LO getting a busted head :/ Idk what to do about the vent.

Ive tried a blanket. He just pulls it off, or hangs from it :s
If it wasnt brick I could ducktape a blanket but tape wont stick to the brick.

didn't they used to make gates that you could connect together? if they doooo, then you could make a "protective perimeter" around the fireplace hearth. i don't know about the air vent... i freakin HATE air vents on the floor.

For th fireplace, I'd put a baby gate(s) all along the edge right in front of the brick.

They make rubber things to go along the edges of fire places. They're like padded. As for the air vent, if you aren't running your air or heat, can you put something on top of it temporarily?
ETA like a chair or something

For the fireplace put a blanket and or some pillows, also try to redirect him away from it. As far as the air vent redirect, after a while he'll get bored with it.

That could work. No idea how I'd get them to stick though.

Could you make a padded bench for the ledge, and maybe anchor it into the brick so he can't move it? If you have other vents, I'd cover that one with one of the magnetic vinyl covers and put a rug or something over it.
