Average 3 year old behaviour?

posted 10th Oct
Hi all, I'm a high school student doing some research for my Human Growth and Development class. If anyone has a 3 year old, or you know anyone who has a 3 year old, I hope you can answer a couple questions for me.

In the past year, how have these skills developed?
-movement
-drawing, more precise movement
-independance
-language understanding
-expressing language or speaking
-understand basic math
-social skills
-emotional development

I would really appreciate any answers, thank you!

Go look for your answers that they want by using legitimate websites instead of a forum for parents.

What kind of assignment is it? Are you supposed to be doing a survey, or is it supposed to be textbook normal? Because you're going to get a wide range of answers from here, and not all of it is going to be textbook normal.

I would, but my assignment was to interview the parents of a 3 year old. Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a 3 year old. So I thought that parents who will talk to each other online could take 2 minutes out of their day to answer a couple questions with their own experiences.

This!
Unless they asked for a survey type thing this isnt the place to get that info, my 3 year old develops at a different rate and in different ways compared to someone else's 3 year old.

Its not a textbook question. I am supposed to interview the parents of a 3 year old. Since I don't know anyone who has a 3 year old, my teacher suggested to go to a forum.

What exactly does it mean by movement.

Sorry it wasn't worded properly. When I say precise movement, i mean things like colouring, writing. Fine motor skills

Generally happy to help out anyone interested in psychology and human development. lol My son is 3 1/2.

In the past year, how have these skills developed?
-movement
He can skip, catch a ball, throw with more accuracy. He can climb a rope lattice or up a slide.
-drawing, more precise movement
He can draw letters, numbers, and basic shapes, and color within the lines. He does not typically fill things in with color completely.
-independance
He is about what you'd expect. I am home base. He can entertain himself. He is fully toilet trained and can mostly handle that by himself.
-language understanding
I almost never find anything I say to him that he does not understand. Even if he does not understand the exact word, he generally understands the context.
-expressing language or speaking
He speaks in complete sentences. He mixes up his pronouns and verb tenses, but mostly gets it right. Him/her, he/she, am/are. Those are what he has problems with.
-understand basic math
He can do basic addition, especially when it comes to asking for more cookies.
-social skills
He plays well with others, even more than one child at a time. He is considerate, generally willing to share his toys, though not if someone just comes up and tries to take them. He says please and thank you, I'm sorry...the general social niceties.
-emotional development
He struggles as most 3 year olds do with this. 3 year olds experience a wide range of powerful emotions that they are not always equipped to deal with. Sometimes this results in tantrums or mood swings. He can get himself back under control and the tantrums get less and less frequent as he gets older, though sometimes the intensity of them is more as he pushes boundaries.

- Movement
Can walk with out tripping, climb ladders, and go up and down stairs by herself using alternating feet.
-Drawing
Can scribble, manipulate clay and finger paints
-Independence
Not sure what this applies to? She is very independent, she plays alone, goes to the bathroom alone, sleeps alone...
-language understanding
She can understand most of what is said, and can follow simple directions
-Expressing language
She speaks in full sentences, can retell a story, and her speech is more than 75% understandable.
-Understand basic math
This is 3 year olds we are talking about right? She doesnt understand math at all.
-Social Skills
Again not sure what this is addressing. She doesnt hit other children, and she can sometimes share.
-Emotional development
She understands simple emotions and can recognize them in other people ( anger, sadness, and happy)

Ok. My daughter is 3 1/2.

Movement.
My daughter can skip, catch a ball and throw it straight to someone, she can ride a bike with no problem, climb a ladder.

Drawing
She might be a little behind(we're getting her evaluated) but she can trace most letters of the alphabet, some numbers, draw shapes and stick figures and does a pretty good job at trying to color in a picture.

Independence- she's very independent, can go to the bathroom herself, brush her own hair, get the stuff for a sandwich if she wants me to make her one, can get her own drink with the help of brother.

Language understanding- she understand pretty much everything I say, if she doesn't she'll say "what" or "huh" so I'll repeat myself.

Expressing language and speaking
She speaks in complete sentences and the only problem she has is he/she and that's becoming rare.

Understanding basic math-
She does pretty good with counting on her fingers to show me/tell me she wants more of something.

Social skills-
She plays well with others, shares and doesn't have a problem unless someone pushes her or takes her toys, them she'll come get me.

Emotional development-
She still has tantrums as many kids do. Her screaming/biting tantrum a have become less and less. She has a problem with her clothes having to fit just right so that will cause a meltdown and tears until i fix them, the same for if she can't get her shoes on fast enough, but as she's learned to try and stay calm before having a fit we've had less tantrums.
