Blood sugar testing...

posted 10th Oct
Today I had my first appt and they sent off a AC1 (can't remember the exact name) since I had GD with DD. I go back in for a Fasting Blood Sugar in 3 weeks. For the ladies who have been through this what was the outcome?

This is my first baby and I have gestational diabetes. After my 1 hour glucose test came back high I had to do a fasting glucose blood draw. I had to fast 12 hours prior to my blood draw. Basically, you get your blood drawn- they make sure you fasted, then I had to drink a larger glucose amount and get my blood drawn every hour for 3 hours.

I don't have to do the drink just yet just fasting blood sugar. DD I the normal testing done then found out I had GD. Since this is my second viable pregnancy they are doing testing earlier

Thats good, I HATED the drink! I sat there for an hour just to have my blood draw, passed it and drank that nasty drink and I threw it up in 5 minutes and had to start all over again the next day! I hope it all works out for you!

I had GD with my first 2. And have type 2 with this one. Didn't even need to do the fasting test. Just told him I was diabetic. I test 4-10 times a day depending on how I am feeling. Right now I take 2000mg of metformin daily, but I think he may switch me to insulin because my sugars are still on the high side. Though not as bad as they where.
With my first one I was told because diabetes runs in my family, with each pregnancy I would most likely get GD. And that with each pregnancy I had the chance that it wouldn't go away after and would turn to type 2. Which it did about 5 yrs after my second was born.
I did manage it with diet and exercise for about a year, no meds, but then my lifestyle changed (I became a truck driver). Now I am a stay at home mom.

Gestational Diabetes is based on placental function in relation to insulin uptake which can only be properly verified after the placenta is fully formed at 16 weeks. Because of that I've never submitted to the AC1 done in early pregnancy despite the fact that I always have GD and I'm considered pre-diabetic with a strong family history of diabetes. Instead I opt to eat like a diabetic and regularly test my blood sugar and adjust with diet and exercise until the end of the second trimester when I do the standard GD test and opt for the 3 hour right away.
