You can only follow the reduction guidelines. There is no cause of SIDS, so sadly, it's sometimes not preventable. You can lessen the odds but you can never fully get rid of the chance.

Actually sleeping with baby lowers it. They unconsciously follow your breathing patterns.

Use a fan in the bedroom where your LO sleeps. Pacifiers can decrease the risk. BF can decrease the risk. Don't smoke. Don't listen to people who say co-sleeping increases sids. It doesn't. It actually decreases it when done correctly. And try not to worry so much.   You can get one of those monitors that goes off if they stop breathing.

this i was also told keep a fan blowing in the room to flow the air around.

you can also buy these things that go under the baby and moniter their HB and vitals and stuff and alarm will sound if something happens to the baby

And your breath is stimulating in the same way that a fan is.

Pacifiers, breastfeeding, a fan in the room, cosleeping correctly, light clothes for sleeping, and baby wearing all reduce the risk but there is no way to eliminate the possibility all together.

SIDs is different than suffocation though. Suffocation can be a concern with cosleeping but it's also a concern with crib sleeping when it's done incorrectly.

But SIDS and suffocation are 2 vastly different things. If your kid suffocates, it isn't SIDS. Besides, the risk of actually suffocating your child while sleeping with them is very low. If it happens, there's usually an underlying issue, such as drugs or alcohol. Or you are a very very heavy sleeper and shouldn't be sleeping with your baby.

When my aunt was pregnant with her oldest, her OB told her that unless you're on drugs or drunk or in some way out of your natural state of being, your instincts will keep you from suffocating the baby. DS sleeps with DH and I if he won't sleep in his bed, and he's fine.

Along with all the other suggested ways, they also have a SIDS monitor you can buy from Walmart, Target, Babies R US, etc....

Co sleepig actually greatly reduces the risk of sids.
