Zantac or Nutramagin?

posted 10th Oct
So DS is currently on Enfamil AR for his reflux. He does better, but lately he has been spitting up A LOT after each bottle again. He burps fine, and does ok right after (sometimes a little spit-up, but nothing terrible) but then 15-30 min, til about 45 min after each bottle he'll throw up a bunch! So I'm gonna talk to his Dr when we get back from vacation, but I'm wondering if I should switch his formula again to the hypoallergenic one, or try zantac, and keep him on the AR? He is happy, unless he gets the hiccups, sleeps fine, rarely throws up after his bottle before bed. Opinions?! Zantac, or Nutramagin? Thx

Nutramigen worked best for us. Zantac never really did anything and the kids hated taking the medicine.

Zantac does stop the throwing up..it eases the pain. My son was also on AR fomula and threw up a ton. We still take zanyac and now use similac Alimentum adding cereal to thicken..it worked wonders

If the spitting up is not painful and he's not crying, and he is gaining weight just fine it is normal and no meds or specialized formula is needed. If he cries when he spits up, that is where zantac would be used. Zantac does NOT stop the spitting up. It just makes it less painful. If he is not gaining weight, a specialized formula may be the way to go.... however, the AR is specifically for spitting up. You pedi may recommend thickening the formula with rice cereal if weigh is an issue.
But as I said... if he is gaining weight just fine, and he is not in any pain... Nothing needs to be done. It just sucks for you bc you have to clean up the mess and constantly have a burp cloth handy LOL. They do grow out of this tho.... so it's no biggie.

Nothing bothers him. He is the happiest baby. But he definitely has reflux, and now even on AR, which has rice starch in it already to thicken it up, he still vomits partially digested formula. And it's a good amount, which shouldn't happen on this formula. I have a bunch of it left tho, so I'm thinking we'll just try the zantac and if it doesn't help by the time we run out I'm gonna switch him to Nutramagin. Stomach problems run on both sides, with some really serious ones on DH's side. I'll be happy if he only ends up with reflux lol

Again, Zantac does not stop the spitting up! It just makes it less painful, so if he not phased by the spitting up, you do not need Zantac! How is his weight??

His weight is fine, I was never concerned about that. I'm concerned with the fact that he is throwing up formula which is specifically made to alleviate spit-up.

But if his weight is fine and he is not in pain... Spitting up is completely normal and nothing to be worried about. The flap that keeps the formula down just needs to mature and that takes some time. U have nothing to worry about at all as long as he is thriving and not in any pain. He's fine! A normal infant that spits up. That's all.

Wanted add tips to help spitting up. Use dr browns or platex drop in bottles. And burp often. Like every 2 ounces. Use gas drop which help the bubbles rise to the top in the belly so when he burps the bubbles are above rather than below the formula in the belly. I know spitting up looks scary and its a pain in the ass.... But it's normal and just takes some time to go away. Believe me, he's fine.

I never said he wasn't fine. I understand all of that. I'm a pediatric MA and he is my second. I'm not new at this. He isn't spitting up, he is vomiting. It is partially digested formula, which isn't supposed to happen on this formula. I've tried Dr Browns, which he hated and I'm currently using playtex vent aire. he didn't like the drop ins either. I just wanted to know if people had better success with zantac or nutramagin. That was all

zantac will not help with vomiting. period. since that is what you want to solve, zantac won't do it.
