dark haired ladies - hair dye question!!

posted 9th Oct
as you can tell from my picture, I have very dark hair. For years I've been trying to lighten it but I just don't know how. I try the hair dye that makes darker colors light (ex - dark to light brown) but they just don't work! I'm trying to get browner hair, more of like a medium to semi-light brown.

How can I go about this!? and hair stylists on here that can give any tips that I can do to lighten my hair?? Any certain type of dye or bleach/dye combinations? I don't want to butcher my hair, jsut reaaaaaaally want to go lighter. My hair looks almost black/very dark brown.

It's too much $$ for me to go to a hair salon and have them do it   it's upwards of $150 for me to get it done there.

TIA!

If you have a beauty school in your area you could go there, they usually have pretty good prices.

I would get a high lighting kit and go from there. Do highlights first and then see how your hair feels and see if you even like the lighter look.

I believe the only way to go lighter is to bleach then put color on top of it. Store bought haircolor is awful.

I do have a few, I've never thought of that! I want to see if there is anything I can try before I spend the $$ to go there.

ugh i reaaaally was trying to stay away from bleaching. It killed my hair when I did it when I was younger. And I'm terrified I'd smurf it up. lol

Have you tried stripping your hair? They sell strip at Walmart. If you have long or thick hair, get two boxes. Strip the hair and then dye it the light/medium color.

Well the box dye "for dark hair" to go lighter is made for NATURAL undyed dark hair.

You will have to bleach it. Color won't remove color.

also, anyone have any tips on what colors would look best with a dark brown hair color? I tried caramel years ago and it looked silly on me.

If you spend a lot of time outside you can spray lemon juice on your hair, it will lighten it.

what does that do? I've never done it before. I might take a trip to Walmart and then Sally Beauty Supply tomorrow!!

Yeah, I'd rather go to a salon instead of messing my hair up lol. I'm planning on getting rid of my red soon and I do NOT want to screw it up!

This - and despite what people tend to think, you're probably a lot safer going to a beauty school because they have educators there to make sure it's done right.
