names from a different culture.

my baby will be half Asian, and i'm torn between giving him/her an American name or an Asian name...i was thinking of having an American first name with an Asian middle name, but my boyfriend is insisting that he have a completely Asian name. the only issue i have is that it would be hars to pronounce and since the last name will be difficult enough, i want to at leasr have an easy to pronounce first name, and then if they wanted to be called by their Asian middle name, they could. what would you do?

I'd probably do the American first name and then an Asian middle name

You could find an Americanized name that still has special meaning for your SO and his family.

Tori (means bird in Japanese)

My daughter is half Chinese. DH and all of his family have Chinese names. I thought we should give her a Chinese middle name, but DH wanted to use American names for both. So she has an American name.   If it's important to your SO, I would use either an Asian first or middle name. Where is your SO's family from? What language do they speak? There are some Asian names that are pretty easy to pronounce.

Very cool. I would suggest browsing Behindthename.com, but they don't have Laotian names.   Boo!

it depends on the name. If you're thinking japanese, these are usually fairly easy to pronounce and the spelling is straight forward. If you're thinking something as complicated as Mandarin, I'd use it as a middle name. You have to remember, America is the land of idiots. You don't have to cater to them, but you definitely don't want to make it hard on your child either.

I would choose an American first name and an Asian middle name. It will be easier on a child that is born and raised in America.

What sort of name are you looking for? Is your BF Japanese or Chinese or Indian or Phillipino or Korean or...? "Asian" isn't a type of name...

I personally love cultural names and don't think pronounciation is a big issue. My DH and I are Greek and our kids are getting Greek names, even though we live in a (mostly) English-speaking community. But our city is very diverse so there are lots of kids out here with names that reflect their different ethnicities.

There are some good names here that would work as a American and a Laotian name.

I find this site very unreliable so double check with a family member who can verify if the names you like are actually Laotian or not.
