Quoting Snotface♫[usmc]:" So, a child should be completely independent from their mother? I don't see how that is logical. ... [snip!] ... you're talking further than preschool, I highly doubt that would be the first thing to come to their mind when they get upset. "I don't think a child should be completely independent, and I don't see it different than cuddling. I don't know how to explain it. My son is only 2, but very independent. I'm constantly praising him by telling him he's a 'big boy' for all the things he does, like going potty, drinking from a cup, getting dressed, etc.. So, if he was still doing something that babies do, like BF, had a pacifier, or drank from a bottle, *edit* I think he would feel like he didn't always have to do other big kid things and would regress.. He still has comforts, they are just growing with him, like having his 'cuddly' and dog, and lots of hugs & kisses, & cuddling. Instead of holding & rocking him when he gets hurt, now I just kiss his owie & he's on his merry way. I don't know, I guess I just see it as part of growing up.. But my son seemed to grow quicker than others and that's okay with me.
Quoting Jillian Lindsey:" so you would let your 3 4 or 5 y/o use a bottle and/or paci???"lol sorry this just reminded me of my niece's pedi saying to let them have their pacifiers as long as they wanted to 8 or 9 because "they're going to need braces anyway."

Quoting Laurnabeth:" You dont think maybe they are just trying to give their kids the best substance a human can have?"not at 3y/o and having a pacifier or bottle that old i damaging same as having an 8y/o sucking on a sippy cup all day if my parents let me have a pacifier or bottle past a year old it would have cost them a lot of money and me a lot of pain braces getting teeth pulled due to bottle rot and its a lot harder to get rid of it once they become attatched

Like get his own snacks and drinks and things like that? I think emotional comfort should be the last thing they become independent from.
Quoting Laurnabeth:" I had a paci till I was 5. My teeth are great. They are straight and never had rot."I thumb sucked until about 10.
